#Quakers condemn arrests of #activists at meeting house
March 30, 2025
"The arrests of six female supporters of activist group #YouthDemand at a Quaker meeting house have been condemned by the faith group.
"Quakers in #Britain said the arrests were the first at a meeting house and 'an aggressive violation'.
"The Metropolitan Police said six people were arrested on Thursday evening at the Westminster Meeting House on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a #PublicNuisance.
"The force said it came amid concerns there were plans to 'shut down' London during April using tactics such as road blocks.
"Youth Demand said more than 30 officers were involved with making the arrests.
"Paul Parker, of Quakers in Britain, said he could not recall anyone being arrested at a Quaker meeting house in living memory.
"'The forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society #CriminalisesProtest.
"'#FreedomOfSpeech, assembly, and fair trials are an essential part of free public debate which underpins #democracy,' he said.
"Police said a further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday - four at addresses in #London and one in #Exeter.
"Youth Demand, which is not affiliated with the Quakers, said the meeting was 'an opportunity to share plans for non-violent #CivilResistance actions' due to take place in April.
"The group claimed a number of houses were also raided on Thursday and Friday as part of the operation.
"Quakers in Britain said: 'Quakers support the right to non-violent public protest, acting themselves from a deep moral imperative to stand up against #injustice and for our planet.
"'Many have taken non-violent direct action over the centuries from the abolition of #slavery to women's #suffrage and prison reform.'
"The Met said the force understood the importance of the right to protest but added that Youth Demand had stated an intention to 'shut down' London in April.
"'We have a responsibility to intervene to prevent activity that crosses the line from protest into serious disruption and other criminality,' a spokesman said.
"On Thursday, officers raided a Youth Demand planning meeting where those in attendance were plotting their April action.
"Six people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.
"A further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday, 28 March. Four of the arrests were at addresses in London and one in Exeter.
'Policing priorities'
"Out of the 11 people arrested, 10 have been released on bail and one will face no further action.
"Asked about the matter on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'I have made clear to the police this government's priorities for policing are reducing serious violence... and bringing back neighbourhood policing, those crimes in town centres like shoplifting.'
"Youth Demand, which describes itself as a 'new youth resistance campaign fighting for an end to #genocide', began carrying out acts of #CivilDisobedience last year.
"Its demands of the government include stopping all trade with #Israel and raising money from 'the #SuperRich and #Fossilfuel #elite' to pay damages for the effects of fossil fuel burning."

Many times I feel we Tamils won't get justice being part of India. If we do, we must leave work and run behind our girls all the time to get our rights.
“Mr. Panton served 30 years in prison for a single drug conviction during the height of the U.S. government’s “War on Drugs” when, like many other Black men, he suffered the disproportionate punishment within the criminal legal system. Mr. Panton was released from prison by a federal judge in August 2020. Today, due to recent reforms, that same conviction would result in a sentence of around six years.” #immigration #injustice #ICE #CivilRights

I'm really trying to hire a lawyer so I can hopefully one day be able to see my oldest daughter, and that's not possible when I'm fundraising for basic needs.
The $5k goal for monthly expenses should help us catch up on bills and start to set some money aside. What we'd really love is a bump so I can get this process going ASAP... given that it's going to take many months, if not years.

"Trump's casual cruelty and dehumanizing hatred for immigrants of all kinds has clearly been internalized by Customs and Border Patrol as a guiding ethos, because there's no other way to explain the appalling treatment of Fabian Schmidt, a 37-year old German national who has lived in the US since his teen years and is a permanent resident. But that didn't stop CBP from arresting him at Logan Airport and subjecting him to torture, stripping him naked and depriving him of food and water before transferring him to the Donald W. Wyatt detention facility in Central Falls, Rhode Island. CBP did not offer any kind of justification for this abhorrent violation of Fabian's human rights. Buckle up, America. If Trump's goons are willing to do this to a white man who is a legal resident, it's only a matter of time before they'll do it to the rest of us."
Quote from the Daily Dose of Democracy email
Agree 100%
The idea that the density of good people is different among different categories, whether races or genders or degrees of ableness or whatever, seems completely suspect to me. So there's that.
But also, abstract goodness is not always the entirety of what is needed of employees. Regardless of what score anyone might get open whatever test you could throw at them, there is intrinsic value and having people who come from different backgrounds. Diverse groups have a better mix of origin stories, and are not just diverse in nature but in nurture.
Diverse groups have walked more paths, seen more things, experienced more situations. There is a greater breadth of empathy. There are more varied sources of inspiration. Inspiration comes in odd ways from different situations.
When solving mysteries, differences in people's personal histories will lead them to see the same situation differently, sometimes shaking them out of overly narrow, limiting, or even toxic assumptions.
When creating policy, having folks present who can more directly represent those impacted can help to call out and perhaps avoid biases, prejudices, indignities or injustices that might be invisible to or unappreciated by a narrower group that is so used to things going a certain way that they don't realize or find it easy to relate to that full space of potential negatives others might endure.
When creating stories, diversity brings more richness of life experience to draw on.
When innovating, diversity brings more points of view a greater breadth of traditions and techniques to draw on, better thinking outside the box because the boxes people have inhabited are so many and varied.
When entertaining, more sources of music, jokes, artistic tools and media. Even with 5000 TV channels and as many grocery store products, we crave variety, which better comes of diversity than a sea of cultural sameness.
One can allege there is a kind of dogged efficiency in eliminating diversity, but there is no reason to suppose it will do anything other than destroy all that has made the US an interesting place to visit, study, and buy from.
The monocultural sludge we are becoming is the farthest thing from smart, safe, healthy, entertaining, or free. Even a highly efficient from of that toxic sludge will still be sludge and will not thrive economically or socially. The stock market is just an early warning sign but there will soon be other even more visible indicators. Our society is melting down before our eyes and the present experiment in selfish, bigoted authoritarianism is the cause, not the cure.
This cesspool of feigned expertise and mindless leadership being thrust upon us claims to be motivated by a desire to avoid bankruptcy, but in fact is the shortest path not only to economic but also moral, cultural and intellectual bankruptcy that anyone could have devised. If there is an efficiency to be claimed it is in the swift path ruin it has charted. Future generations of locusts will study the raw, ruthless, and ultimately pointless efficiency it has required to dismantle and plunder a thriving society in such short order.

The Injustice System scores another win:
...the "subject officer," told Dumas to get down and crawl toward him. As Dumas was on the ground, the officer kicked his head, with a civilian witness reporting it was "as if you're kicking … a soccer ball." Dumas was knocked unconscious, and had to undergo emergency surgery for a brain injury. Police determined he was unarmed, and he was never charged with a crime.
