Since the #SuperBowl in NewOrleans is today, let’s look at the [new] #SuperDome, & #Hurricane #Katrina 20yrs later.
What is the state of #housing, climate risk, flooding, the inadequate Federal response in the area?
1800 ppl died.
Track its recovery vs, say richer #LA. #BlackMastodon
Letter From NOLA

The recent horrible events in New Orleans reminded me of another disaster that happened there 20 years ago. This is a song about that.
Weather is cold across much of the USA.
If you need to prep for power outages, consider a #solar generator. When I saw how they treated ppl during #Katrina, I decided to plan for emergencies.
I bought #EcoFlow Delta2 & Delta 3 w solar panels.
On sale it was $650.
Easy peasy setup, use. (See YouTube reviews)
Good for renters & apartment dwellers too.
Send one to people impacted by #LAFires.

Most of them will be forced to Las Vegas. Or Atlanta. Or Albuquerque. Or Fresno. Or Phoenix.
Sound familiar?
#Katrina and #Harvey , anyone?

@ErickaSimone @PeachMcD They couldn't handle it at all. The #Katrina refugees that came here to Albuquerque were Black. I bet the same will happen for the fires. Our state is "too minority" for MAGA and racists.
@PeachMcD @ErickaSimone Albuquerque got a lot of #Katrina refugees. I wouldn't be surprised if we get refugees from #Altadena as a result.

URGENCE #MAYOTTE post #CHIDO
Vous vous rappelez du racisme du traitement politique et sanitaire de l'ouragan #Katrina en 2005? Dites-vous que c'est exactement ce qui se passe maintenant, les hurlements de l'extrême-droite masquent des ravages dramatiques

#Christofascists were quick to blame disasters caused by #hurricanes - such as #Katrina in #NewOrleans and #Sandy in #NewJersey - as punishment of #LGBTQ communities sent by God.

Since the #MAGA cult has willingly voted FOR MORE #ClimateChange , the next time a #hurricane devastates a #RedState should we send them a ‘note of congratulations’ along with the federal aid that the welfare states such as #Louisiana depend on?
After breakfast we headed over to see the #ThePresbytere 's exhibit on #Hurricane #Katrina Absolutely devastating. I remember being 12-13 and not understanding what was happening, why government didn't seem to be helping, etc... It broke me today as I looked at a hatchet and tried to explain to Bit(7F) and Byte(5F) how people had to chop their way out of their attics. It was a good opportunity to remind them to look for the helpers. Always.
The economic literature on Hurricane Katrina
Regarding #Hurricane #Milton weakening before impact, remember that Hurricane #Katrina also weakened before it absolutely wrecked New Orleans.
We are 19 years post-Katrina and the NOLA metro population still remains below what was recorded in the 2000 Census.
Milton will likely be the strongest storm to strike this part of Florida in over 100 years.
When the network news uses "The L Word" ("Lie") to describe the comments of a former president, that's significant.
#TheOrangeMenace is telling victims of #HurricaneHelene that "#FEMA is running out of funds b/c of all the money it's spending on #immigrants at the #Border", that payments are limited to "just $750/person" and "NOT to accept help from FEMA b/c it gives them your name and puts you on a list" (for what?)
He's also calling it "the worst response to a Hurricane since #Katrina."
In the normal course of work yesterday morning I was on a call with a friend in Taiwan and she told us how things were going with the island-wide shutdown for #Typhoon #Krathon. Another friend gave us an update on her sister who lives in a small town outside of #Asheville. She has running water so she built a shower in the front yard for her neighbors. I said I’ve been worried since #Helene about the people I met who live at Mountain Gardens, a sort of sanctuary for rare medicinal herbs on steep terrain at the top of a dirt road up under Mount Mitchell. Another work friend (in #Portland so we’ve been through fire seasons and heat domes together remotely) dug through platforms I’m not on and found some posts from them. One was a video: sheets of brown water washing their gardens down the hill. A few hours later I was on a call with people in #Phoenix. I think they said it was 113 there at the time. We talked for a while about what it’s like to live in a city that hot. One of them said they had moved there from New Orleans after #Katrina. “I think I like to be in places where I can see it really happening.” At the end of the day I was writing something and I had to check how to spell the name of a river. It’s in a far away city I won’t ever visit because I think I’m done flying. I pulled up a map and there was a warning note on it saying the area was under travel restrictions. That river was flooding too.
