Steven Louis RayOrnamental Grass (2017) A 5x7” paper negative taken through a wooden Burke and James large format view camera. I’ve always thought this plant was Pillar of Smoke (Stipa ramosissima) but now I’m thinking that it might be Mexican Feather Grass (Stipa tenuissima). Unsure. Do you know? At any rate, it’s one of the longest tenured plants in the garden, having arrived in 2008. It’s roughly five feet tall by 3-4 feet wide at it’s head. This image was one of my first paper negatives and along with a few others its success encouraged me to continue with the medium. Paper negs have come to be my favorite large format material. They’re insanely cheap and their development process is exactly what you use for prints, as it’s the same material.
