Porter<p>Honeymoon period has worn off. Vim definitely has some downsides. Mainly two: plugins crash unexpectedly all the time, including LazyGit, my LSP, and random dependencies. The second downside is difficulty in customization. Of course, it all comes with the territory, it's in line with the philosophy. But occasionally I get worn out and will switch back to VSCode to wrap up my work. On the bright side I'm more aware of my code structure and how it functions. I've also doubled the number of memorized git commands to get around LazyGit limitations. Honestly? I'm still pretty happy with vim, but not all in yet.</p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/vim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vim</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a></p>
Porter<p>Here's my Vim story. I heard someone on a blog say "I got fast with VSCode, but couldn't get any faster. Then I found Vim." The next day I saw my coworker at lightning speed in Vim on his new concave split mechanical keyboard. Originally I always thought poorly of Vim, because "why would anyone code in a terminal?" while reflecting on the terrible ten minutes I spent in Vi once on Linux trying to figure out how to leave. I finally thought it was time to see what this technical insanity was all about and put it all to rest. </p><p><a href="https://vmst.io/tags/vim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vim</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> <a href="https://vmst.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a></p>

ottO<p>So, I *think* I have a fix for this lua, I am going to add to my lazyvim forks and for snacks.vim, fix it, use mine and submit upstream.<br>Also, if I install stylua with pkg none_ls will find it and it doesn't matter that it doesn't compile <br><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/snacks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>snacks</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>runbsd</span></a></p>
ottO<p>I'm just a man, looking at someone else's lua code and wondering why the neovim libuv callback is getting a nil file :( <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a></p><p>Looks like I'll be using Trouble to debug...</p>
ottO<p>OK, I have the forks of <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a> and the starter up, i've made the modifications for my stuff to pull in ... my stuff, and i've removed the lua_ls ... an that failure is done.<br>I might add the "reset nvim" script i wrote too.</p><p>Now I'll move my nvim plugins from my other config, maybe add a rust lua server, and see where we get<br><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>runbsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a></p>
ottO<p>ok, LazyVim and LazyVim starter "migrated" to brew.bsd.cafe ( why not? ). Let's see if I can get time to do it. <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>runbsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a></p>
ottO<p>ok, new plan, i'm going to create my own lazyvim fork and hack it until it works on freebsd<br><a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/runbsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>runbsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a></p>
ottO<p>One super disappointing thing about my <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/freebsd" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>freebsd</span></a> setup is that <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a> is messed up. I really don't want to write the config by hand ( even with guides ), but I guess I have to, because I need it.</p>
NiceMicro<p>Redid my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> config to keep up with the times (I used many deprecated<br>plug-ins, and didn't use <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/lua" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lua</span></a>).</p><p>I haven't the faintest idea what I'm doing, I just followed a tutorial, got <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/lazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyVim</span></a>, and a few plug-ins, and I am utterly stomped by how to set up the <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a> lsp, especially as I want to include <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/mypy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mypy</span></a> type checking.</p><p>The duality of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/documentation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>documentation</span></a> is that I either get a tutorial that explains nothing and expects you to copy paste, or a manual that goes waaaay over my head.</p>
Filip 👻<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@chringel" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>chringel</span></a></span> I’ve been entertaining same idea for a while now, especially as <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/LazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LazyVim</span></a> diverges from my needs (though, TBF, it’s still quite flexible). How do you like it so far? Is there anything you miss from Lazy?</p>
Christian 👼<p>I ditched <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/LazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LazyVim</span></a> in favour of <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/kickstart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kickstart</span></a>.</p><p>Feels like I have control over my <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> config again.</p>
Eamon<p>Update: I figured it out, answer in next toot</p><p>Would any <a href="https://social.coop/tags/LazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LazyVim</span></a> users be willing to help me out? I'm trying to get a beloved Vim plugin working with lazy.vim and I haven't been able to figure it out.</p><p>It's vim-textobj-quote, for putting typographic/"curly" quotes in text: <a href="https://github.com/preservim/vim-textobj-quote" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/preservim/vim-texto</span><span class="invisible">bj-quote</span></a></p>
David Brockman<p>Does anyone have a guide on how to set up <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> on <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> using <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/lazyvim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>lazyvim</span></a> ? I would like to let LazyVim manage the nvim plugins instead of having them in my nix config but I'm not really sure if that's even possible.</p>
Christin White<p>Yeah, I’m sold on <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/LazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LazyVim</span></a>, needs more tweaking but it's such a sensible starting point and more stable than my custom config. </p><p>Also Snacks, what an amazing collection of tools. Folke apparently had an 'hey echasnovski (mini.nvim), hold my beer.’ moment. </p><p>You could build one hell of an <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a> code editor config with those two multi-function plugins alone.</p>
Eamon<p>Ok I have spent one working week with <a href="https://social.coop/tags/LazyVim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LazyVim</span></a> and "things that infuriate me" outnumber "neat features" by a distressing margin. I might give it one more week, but it's not looking good for everyone's favorite Neovim setup.</p>
