I've been trying very hard to grow my #localnews publication without any presence on Meta or X, and while I've seen a decent level of growth and engagement, I can't help but feel like I am leaving money on the table.

And that's ok - I am willing to lose some subscribers up front to build my outlet outside of their walled gardens.

But, I'm curious, are there any people in #BritishColumbia and/or #Canada who would be willing to pay a few bucks a month to support a hyperlocal local news platform?

Last week, Christopher Baxter, the editor of @SpotlightPA, a nonprofit local newsroom in Pennsylvania, made a post on LinkedIn that started: “I recently had lunch with a staunch, pro-Trump Republican and highly successful business leader, and his views on local news changed my own.” In the post, Baxter went on to explain that nonprofit newsrooms' focus on pro-democracy language might not be serving them well. Intrigued, NiemanLab's Sophie Culpepper gave Baxter a call to find out more.

Dear Friends,
Newsday, our regional paper, is looking at transportation safety on Long Island. Slated as a year long project, it is off to an excellent start. Please subscribe. I don't work for them, but did years ago as an independent. New managing editor complements seasoned editorial team.
