Last year I gave a keynote at Vanguard VSC about the last 10 years of mainframe hacking, check it out:
Tuesday, October 1st is our annual IBM Z Day! It's free and virtual, so you already have everything you need to attend
We have various journeys across tracks we put together, along with a trio of badges that attendees can earn by attending a series of sessions the event. Really excited about hardware sessions, real-world AI implementation, and other client stories across key technologies on the mainframe.

On October 1st I have invited Matt Germonprez of @chaoss to join me at #IBMZDay to chat about open source software!
How important is it in tech today? How does that role present itself when it comes to work on #mainframes?
We'll provide background & a tour of open source tools that folks industry-wide will find familiar, from bash to Python and a whole world of CI/CD tools, both in #Linux and IBM z/OS environments.
The event is online and free!

One of the big projects my team has been working on is our #IBMZDay virtual event coming up on October 1st.
The schedule isn't public yet, but I've had a sneak peek so I can help put together a Developer Journey and we've brought in some new track leads this year to make it a fascinating event for all levels of folks interested in #mainframes (and those who work in hybrid cloud environments with mainframes).
Anyway, it's all free, so if this sparks your interest: https://ibm.biz/ibmzday-2024
LOL at Comments on #Reddit about #mainframe systems ...
"I'm a #Kubernetes #Sysadmin and have very likely run several times the workload [on public #cloud #IaaS] that one of these #mainframes can handle at a tiny fraction of the price."
No you have not. I know, coz, physics.
If you can, please pitch in to help The Computer Museum in the small town of Camburzano, Italy.
They've got hold of a haul of ancient big iron in surprisingly good shape and they need funds to safeguard this rare machinery:
We are about to save an enormous quantity of extremely rare machines, some of which may be unique, dating back as far as 70 years.
Among the equipment to be saved are machines from both #IBM and #Remington #Rand for the creation and management of punch cards (one of the earliest methods of loading programs), huge #Sperry #Univac #mainframes complete with their tape units, disks, and printers, as well as the earliest #Olivetti systems. All the machines are in astonishingly good condition and perhaps, with good care, even functional.

I always wanted to work on #zseries systems, but sadly never got the chance to do so.
Why Do #Mainframes Still Exist? What's Inside One? 40TB, 200+ Cores, AI, and more!
Organizations that use #mainframes want things that are officially supported, not just #OpenSource tools made available.
So first the fun technical work of porting #git #bash #curl #make #perl #vim #ncurses & #less to z/OS was done, and now...
IBM Open Enterprise Foundation for z/OS!
And it's available as a no cost add on to what these organizations already get from IBM
What a journey this has been
It's Changelog & Friends!
THE Cameron Seay joins us once again!
This time we learn more about his life/history, hear all about the boot camps he runs, discuss recent advancements in AI / quantum computing and how they might affect the tech labor market & more!
Mainframe Skills Council!

This is kind of a big deal, and the idea has been floating around for a while.
As much as we joke, #mainframes are still all over the place, and though we're doing everything we can to make using them easier to use (and succeeding!) they operate quite a bit differently than how many folks are used to working with a server. Making sure the opportunity to skill up is made easy and discoverable is incredibly important.
Working on #mainframes means hearing phrases like:
"We are now able to use higher level programming languages, like C++"
On the same morning as:
"I'm working on this tool written in Rust for DevOps-driven workflows on z/OS!"
This morning while driving to an appointment I had the opportunity to listen to the latest z/Action! Podcast, on "Rock-Solid Reliability -- Why Financial Institutions Rely on IBM Z" https://community.ibm.com/community/user/ibmz-and-linuxone/blogs/lee-sullivan1/2023/12/22/zaction-podcast-rock-so
It was nice to hear the continued stress put upon just how mind-bogglingly reliable #mainframes are, but guest Giora Bar also spent a good chunk of time praising good documentation. I love documentation, so it was extra special for me to see continued validation of the value it brings
@9to5Mac
#Mainframes and terminals are returning.
Thanks no…
Ok, in this one the IBM Telum chip in the new #mainframes is on the slide, so we're getting down to serious business, and I'm absolutely being full grown up serious*
* I'm never THAT serious, so this is unlikely, but I am certain that I'm sharing true, educational knowledge!
I'm definitely* making some joke about #mainframes here.
* Sarcasm, but entirely likely, I do make a lot of delightful, kind jokes related to mainframes
Dave Plummer visits #IBM and explains why #mainframes are still needed. #Z16
Also, today I learned about RAIM.
