d4doome<p>Flesh and the Devil is a 1926 MGM silent melodrama starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. A huge hit which made Garbo a star. Gloriously lurid, steamy, melodramatic and romantic and absolutely dripping with sex. Garbo sizzles. Great movie.</p><p>My review: <a href="https://dfordoom-movieramblings.blogspot.com/2024/03/flesh-and-devil-1926.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dfordoom-movieramblings.blogsp</span><span class="invisible">ot.com/2024/03/flesh-and-devil-1926.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/20smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>20smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/20smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>20smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1920smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1920smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1920smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1920smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/silentfilm" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>silentfilm</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/silentfilms" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>silentfilms</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/silentmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>silentmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/silentmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>silentmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/silentcinema" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>silentcinema</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/romancemovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>romancemovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/romancemovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>romancemovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/JohnGilbert" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JohnGilbert</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GretaGarbo" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GretaGarbo</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodramas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodramas</span></a></p>
d4doome<p>Mandalay (1934) belongs to a sub-genre I dearly love, the pre-code tropical melodrama. With Kay Francis as a high-class hooker and sexual adventuress. She wears fabulous slinky 30s dresses. She’s at the top of her game here. Great movie.</p><p>My review: <a href="https://dfordoom-movieramblings.blogspot.com/2024/03/mandalay-1934.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dfordoom-movieramblings.blogsp</span><span class="invisible">ot.com/2024/03/mandalay-1934.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/30smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>30smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/30smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>30smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1930smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1930smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1930smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1930smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/precode" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>precode</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/precodemovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>precodemovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/precodemovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>precodemovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/precodehollywood" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>precodehollywood</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodramas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodramas</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/KayFrancis" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>KayFrancis</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/MichaelCurtiz" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MichaelCurtiz</span></a></p>
d4doome<p>The Damned Don’t Cry (1950), a delightfully overheated noir-tinged Joan Crawford melodrama. She becomes a fashion model and naturally winds up as a gangster&#39;s moll. A fine movie although Crawford was fifteen years too old for the part.</p><p>My review: <a href="https://dfordoom-movieramblings.blogspot.com/2023/09/the-damned-dont-cry-1950.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dfordoom-movieramblings.blogsp</span><span class="invisible">ot.com/2023/09/the-damned-dont-cry-1950.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/40smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>40smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/40smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>40smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1940smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1940smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1940smovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1940smovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/JoanCrawford" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JoanCrawford</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodramas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodramas</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/gangstermovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gangstermovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/gangstermovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>gangstermovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/filmnoir" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>filmnoir</span></a></p>
d4doome<p>Madonna of the Seven Moons is a 1945 British Gainsborough melodrama but melodrama is hardly an adequate word to describe this truly bizarre film. It&#39;s beyond mere melodrama. Over-the-top, outrageously excessive, a delight from start to finish.</p><p>My review: <a href="https://dfordoom-movieramblings.blogspot.com/2017/08/madonna-of-seven-moons-1945.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dfordoom-movieramblings.blogsp</span><span class="invisible">ot.com/2017/08/madonna-of-seven-moons-1945.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/classicmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>classicmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/1940smovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>1940smovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/Britishcinema" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Britishcinema</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/britishmovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>britishmovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/britishmovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>britishmovies</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodrama" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodrama</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/melodramas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>melodramas</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/GainsboroughPictures" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GainsboroughPictures</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/PhyllisCalvert" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PhyllisCalvert</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/StewartGranger" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>StewartGranger</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/romancemovie" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>romancemovie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.ie/tags/romancemovies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>romancemovies</span></a></p>
Jess McGrath<p>MADONNA OF THE SEVEN MOONS (’45): Another of the feverish Gainsborough melodramas, this one really taking the cake in the “twists no one could have possibly predicted” department. Without giving too much away: a staid woman lives quiet existence after a childhood trauma, but then her daughter comes to see her and the careful veneer deteriorates. I loved the feverish, potboiling atmosphere of the 2nd half. And beautifully photographed too. <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/melodramas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>melodramas</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/britishfilm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>britishfilm</span></a></p>
