#mitigate

Continued thread

The Sierra Club lawsuit is asking that Caltrans properly analyze project impacts as specified in SB 743 in its environmental analysis and to fully #mitigate for those #impacts (i.e GHG emissions) as required under #SB32- using the newer dynamic UCD Induced Traffic calculator and mitigating these additional #VMTs through subsidies to public transit agencies and traffic management strategies instead of the wildly optimistic and woefully underfunded assumptions.

100 #Climate
How to celebrate the 100th toot on #Climate #ClimateEmergency #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #ClimateLegal and last but not least #ClimateSolutions ?
In short : toots directly related to my [pinned] 'Mission Statement'.
The only celebration is the picture below, and quite cynical. Otherwise a celebration is not really called for.

WHAT TO DO TO SAVE THE PLANET AND IT'S LIFE ?

#Mitigation or #Adaptation ?
The answer is simple: both.
#Sequestering ? Always.

MITIGATION means : to reduce the factors that promote or cause climate change. This is hard... but also the ONLY DURABLE CURE in the long run.
Why is it so HARD?
* It is very impopular with the general public. It means losing luxuries perceived as 'a civil right'. Humans are not made to comprehend this.
* Civilizations and cultures that are first confronted with the consequences are also the civilization the least equipped with taking action.
* It costs [very] much money. The predominant economic structures are not equipped, or motivated to react. Investment have seemingly no direct effect.
* This cannot be done alone. It's bigger than a state or nation. It has to be Global. And by Action, not BlaBla.

ADAPTATION means : to react to the ramifications of the climate crisis. e.g. when flooded you build a dam; in case of wildfires you increase the fire dept., when you get hot switch on the A.C. Don't get me wrong: adaptation is in most cases necessary.
This is MORE EASY... but in the long run the climate crisis will continue. You can only build a dam this high, you won't need a fire dept. when there are no more trees, what will you do when the A.C. has no more power ?
* This is very egoistic, short sighted and dumb. And that's why is more popular: save my house, my town,my city instead of save the planet [there is no planet B]
* Investments have a direct revenue.Be it that these have to be constant, a capitalist dream but in the end a bottomless pit.
* It can be done on a smaller more comprehensible scale. Simple to understand.
* The MAJOR FLAW about this is that you playing catch-up with #ClimateCollapse, a race 'we' can't win unless we can #Mitigate the climate emergency successfully.

But you probably knew this, ...

so this is more a toot to compact arguments to use against the
Nay sayers, or the "Yes, but" sayers.
Maybe the very most important thing is to keep talking to 'the other side'.
Make and keep those aware of the slow #ClimateEmergency .
It may be slow and unobtrusive but by comparison it's more important than for instance the rise of #Fascism, the wars on different continents, genoside or any other problem that makes the news. While all connected, #ClimateEmergency is #Global !

" #Carbon #Colonialism: #Oil -Rich #UAE Buys Up Large Swaths of #Africa for #CarbonCredits to Keep Polluting - As #DemocracyNow! broadcasts from #COP28 in #Dubai, we look at how the United Arab Emirates is using its vast oil money to buy up the rights to land in many #African countries in order to sell #carbon credits to major #polluters, a plan that critics characterize as a new form of colonialism. “After failing to #mitigate at the source,” wealthy polluters now “want to, basically, buy, on the cheap, African land,” says Power Shift Africa’s Mohamed Adow about wealthy nations’ failure to deliver on climate finance and turn to a “land grab” on the African continent. “What they’re doing is actually commodifying nature,” says Adow, who describes carbon credits as an “imaginary concept” amounting to “permits to pollute.”

Thank you Dr Craig Dalzell @thecommongreen for bringing this really important report to our attention!

Sure there are fires on beautiful islands (#Maui, #Tenerife), #hurricanes headed to the desert SW US (#Hilary), and entire cities being evacuated due to #wildfires (#Yellowknife), but is your package from Amazon running late? That may be #ClimateChange as well - drought has lowered the level of water in the #PanamaCanal mandating ship's carry fewer containers and fewer ship's pass through the canal every day.

This is what #adaptation looks like - not tech solutions, nor panel discussions, nor sweeping new laws; rather a slow interruption of our cultural norms perforated with complete upheaval of our lives. Adaptation will be multi-generational (meaning civilization will degrade over generations) if don't start to #mitigate and #multisolve soon.

Here at precursor, we can support NOAA and other stakeholders in protecting against the effects of #spaceweather, which can damage valuable infrastructure both in space and on the ground. With more geomagnetic events coming up this week, it's important we #prepare now and #map the #ionosphere to issue the proper #forecast.

precursor can help support our planet's infrastructure, including valuable power grids, GPS, and satellite communications via our real-time #spaceweather forecasting. Let's not wait to mitigate and prevent the debilitating effects of space weather - which can even be auroras, and support our infrastructure now!
