California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera), the only palm native to the western U.S., is fire-adapted. Its trunk resists burning, only losing some of its outer layers, leaving a charred layer to protect it from future fires. More charring means more resistance.

A walkway surrounded by stately Royal Palms, native to Cuba, nearby spots on the east coast of Mexico and Central America, and Florida.

These have been preserved in the McKee Botanical Garden, which was once a Florida tourist attraction with a jungle theme.

View looking up from the ground to see more than five tall pine trees against a blue sky. The palms have a pleasant looking full cluster of fronds at the very top. The trunks are smooth. The sun is blocked by one of the trees adding a background glow in the center of the photo. The ground is made up a brown dirt path with flowers and green shrubbery surrounding it on both sides.
