Vienna's third permacomputing.net meeting is drawing closer - 4 days to go!

* Tuesday, July 15th 19:00-22:00

* We meet outside in the south-east corner of Auer-Welsbach-Park (U4 Schönbrunn, openstreetmap.org/way/21990699)

* Look for a handful of people with a picnic blanket and a battery-powered Casio Keyboard from the 90ies

* "Battery-powered Casio Keyboard from the 90ies??" ... Yes! Because our topic will be batteries: Building open source batteries, batteries and the energy transition, lithium mining, ethical ramifications, and so on.

* Anyone interested in the topic(s) of permacomputing is very welcome, whether you're just curious or already a seasoned permacomputer, we're glad to have you!

Prendre soin de nos dispositifs techniques est une approche militante de l’édition · Entretien avec Antoine Fauchié, par Servanne Monjour

journals.openedition.org/revue

After the Code of Conduct and the Mediation process, the Cooperative Development Guidelines now have a Governance Document that can be used by any Organization/Foundation/Collective/Community/Project that wants to have a governance based on participatory, equity and permacomputing/accessibility principles.

Its time for us to finally start building participatory digital commons, that are developed by the community and for the community and the Governance document is part 1 of doing just that. (Decision making and Structure will follow after this).

I am also excited to announce that @queerspark has also been listed as a collective that adopted pieces of the Cooperative Development Guidelines.

Most of my work is informed by field research on the use of everyday technologies under extraordinary circumstances. ... I am currently working on the development of anarchist technologies for the Rojava Revolution in North-East Syria (more info on my Telegram channel: @rojavatech).

The Nook Glowlight was originally released in 2013 and discontinued in 2024. I found it the discards of a college. I just tried downloading some epubs onto it's 500 mb storage with good success. I'm lucky that it already has a registered account (although it doesn't connect, it reduces the battery drain upon failure to identify an account) and the latest version of the official software. I look forward to keeping it at my bedside for reading.

Artist and Designer Chaline Bang ( @chalinebang ) will talk about her personal adventures and collective experiments in permacomputing. She is a member of the Rotterdam-based research group _permacomputing evenings_ and will share how they learned to build servers out of obsolete smartphones using postmarketOS. The group conducted experiments into practical techniques and aesthetic approaches as well as organizing public events with outside researchers.

La permacomputation est une littératie écologique · Entretien avec Aymeric Mansoux, par Servanne Monjour (2025)

journals.openedition.org/revue

Thanks to a book recommendation by @bert_hubert [1], I went on a tangent learning more about the absolutely fascinating history and workings of core memory (and core rope memory, its read-only version). Some of this also very interesting for #PermaComputing and giving me ideas for future art projects...

I'm pondering design for a super minimal #pocketComputer, not a phone replacement but rather a device tailored to do only what's useful to me not distracting, basically what do i need on an average day out when i don't want to be stuck in my phone?

Ideally i could make this modifiable in a way that anyone could tailor it to their own needs and make one, so:

If you had to choose 4 essential features to leave your phone at home, what would they be?
