I am the volunteer tech guy for my wife's cooperative art gallery. Without my input, they went out and bought an #Epson #printer. My wife brought it home to get it set up. No problem, I thought. But NO, because Epson wanted the computer's location during driver install. And even trying to give up my privacy to them didn't work - the install still failed.

I told my wife they could take it back because I wasn't going to start extracting raw driver files etc for a company so ridiculous. Garbage.

There's nothing smart about HP Smart. Or just HP for that matter. The printer continually isn't recognised on our WiFi network. The HP Smart app wants access to 'Location' to reset it. It's all really shite.

Gone back to the old-fashioned way of connecting it to the laptop with a wire and it works great without any of HP's involvement.

It's symptomatic of the enshittification of everything.

So as we all know, printer manufacturers are all land pirate criminals that will all go up against the wall when the peoples revolution comes.

Here is how to reset a #Brother Cartridge TN253M to full.
There is plenty of videos how to reset TN253 but not the #TN253M which is slightly different...

First and above all.
And I can not stress this enough.
NEVER EVER EVER NEVER Update your printer firmware. Unless it's chasing and eating your pets, the sole purpose of a printer firmware "upgrade" is to fuck you. If there are any hidden circumvention options.
The upgrade will fuck you and you can't roll it back.

See the little plastic tab on the photo? It is now in used up position.
After you refill the car-triage... or inherit a half full cartridge from another printer (in my case the fusor died on the office printer) $180 part on a $380 printer.
50,000 prints.
Fuck you very much.

Unscrew the two metal screws.
Gently lift the hood.
Move the T shaped piece so its at the bottom of the screw.
Put everything back together.
The little white nub in the aperature will be at the bottom "full" position and the printer will fuck it as soon as you put it in and will begin to use software counter.

There were literally no videos or pictures on the entire Interwebs how to reset the TN253M variant.

🧵 2/2 turns out, the distro had nothing to do with it.

A gear in the 3rd party toner cartridge broke. Luckily i still had the old OEM part laying in the e-waste box.

One dusty gear salvage mess later - it's fixed. 👍
Ka-ching, 20 bucks for a new toner saved. 😃

I've just attempted to print a test page, on #CachyOS / #Arch.

My #Ricoh SP150 #printer made terrifying noises! 😱 …i've pulled the AC mains cable, before it rattled itself to bits.

I only have #Linux drivers as a .deb file; i've extracted the "zip file" and put the files in their CUPS path, manually.

Yeah, nah, i'll NOT attempt printing on a non- #Debian / #Ubuntu Linux, again!

I'm done with bleeding edge and rolling releases - i want a somewhat curated and stable experience! 😅

If anyone is looking for a compact b/w laser #printer with duplex printing, LAN, and first-class #Linux support, OKI B432dn seems to be it, judging from a short testing session. Everything works OOTB, just install the PPD file they provide on their website (and even say was tested with #Ubuntu 20.04, 18.04, 16.04, #Debian 10, and #CentOS 8).

This is not a sponsored post, I bought it with my own money. I just know how painful it is to find one like that and get first-hand info. #printing
