Marlowe (1969), a surprisingly good adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The Little Sister scripted by Stirling Silliphant, with James Garner making an effective Philip Marlowe. Marlowe encounters hippies and lots of late 60s California decadence.

A Gun for Honey was published 1958. Busty hardboiled girl PI Honey West (who packs a rod and never wears a bra) is after a psycho who kisses girls to death. The mystery plot is solid. Sleazy, perverse, trashy, amusing, entertaining, delightful.

The Savage Salome is a 1961 Carter Brown thriller featuring hip PI Danny Boyd. Danny is hired by an opera singer to find her dog's murderer. He finds a lot more than that. If you love trashy sleazy hardboiled PI thrillers you'll love this one.

Johnny Staccato (1959) a stylish gritty jazz-fuelled film noir-inflected PI TV series with John Cassavetes as a piano player/private eye. Similar to Peter Gunn but better - more neurotic, edgy and noirish.

Leave Her To Hell, a 1958 thriller by Fletcher Flora, an often overlooked US pulp writer. A fine slightly hardboiled PI murder mystery with just a tinge of noir. A woman about to marry a rich man wants to know what became of his previous wife.

The 1978 The Big Sleep with Mitchum is nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be. It has its problems but it's highly entertaining. Most people hate the 70s setting but Marlowe could quite plausibly have been still working as a PI in 1978.

Farewell, My Lovely (1975) gave Robert Mitchum at 57 his first chance to play Philip Marlowe. He does a superb job as an ageing worldweary Marlowe. Charlotte Rampling is great in female fatale mode. One of the great neo-noirs.
