It's so tiring to see people spout off online with their half understood BS like they know what they are talking about.
Was just looking at something about radium dials on watches. Idiot after idiot was spouting off about how radium is an alpha emitter so the radiation could be stopped by a piece of paper so it's not so bad for you.
about 50% true. The problem with alpha radiation is if you get it inside you it really cooks the area. Also radium decays into other things.

One thing to remember: When people used to put radium in all sorts of things to put on and in your body, the main reason more people did not die is that actual radium is quite expensive. If it had not been they would have actually put it in more of the products and at higher levels.

Today in Labor History February 18, 1955: The U.S. launched Operation Teapot at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Teapot included 14 nuclear bomb tests. Wasp was the first, detonated on February 18. It had a yield of 1.2 kilotons. During shot Wasp, ground forces participated in Exercise Desert Rock VI. This included an armored task force moving to within 3,000 ft of ground zero, while the mushroom cloud was still growing. From 1945 through 1962, the U.S. conducted 230 atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, with approximately 235,000 military personnel participating. Most were enlisted men, from the navy. However, millions of people were exposed to the fallout from U.S. nuclear weapons tests in the southwest of the U.S. and the Marshall Islands. University of Arizona economist Keith Meyers estimates that radioactive fallout was responsible for 340,000 to 690,000 American deaths from 1951 to 1973.

Not again! Uranium mining in #novascotia is being promoted by the Conservative government. The moratorium and ban on mining lasted over 40 years. Unfortunately once uranium deposits are disturbed the mineral will find it's way to spread throughout the environment and food chain. Many of these #radioactive isotopes remain active for tens of thousands of years. For what purpose? To boil water and to manufacture #weapons #radiation cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia

#Ukraine has suffered an endless litany of shells, rockets, and #drones aimed at primarily civilian infrastructure and residences throughout the #UkraineWar

This is the aftermath of a #drone strike by #Russia on the #Chernobyl sarcophagus at 2 AM Friday

The sarcophagus is a concrete protective shell over Unit 4 that exploded in 1986

A fire was ignited and was extinguished

#Radiation levels are normal

A tedious repair job is now required to prevent leaks of radiation

#Russia’s military used a #drone with a high-explosive warhead to hit the former #Chernobyl #nuclear power plant in #Ukraine overnight, damaging the protective shelter that prevents #radiation leaks, President Volodymyr #Zelensky of Ukraine said on Friday.

In a post on social media, Zelensky called the damage “significant” but said that there were no signs of increased radiation at the plant, the site of the worst nuclear accident in history.
