So I have two #raspberrypi zero W2's coming to become a #pwnagochi and a #bjorn. Are there any other cool things to do with these little boards? I have a few #rpi5 boards as well and I really want to learn a little bit of offensive security with them. Help?

Installed #OpenVoiceOS on my #RPi5. It works, more or less. The next step is to explore the skills. For instance, when I tell it to play the news, I get NPR rather than CBC.

I'll probably complicate things by installing vanilla Debian, once that's available for the #RaspberryPi 5 in about six months.

I have a WiFi network in the house, with an #RPi4 as the router. I got a new #RPi5 recently, but it doesn't connect to that WiFi network (it does connect to a different one, so it's not completely malfunctioning).

Does anyone have an idea what I should try to fix this problem?

#NAS experts:
I'm thinking of abandoning my #Rpi5 ZFS NAS project because the 8-bay drive box has no software-controlled power switch. I can gracefully shut down the brain and save the data, but can't cut the enormous draw on the UPS. Seems counter-productive.

So I'm going to return the drive-stack, and try for a used #SuperMicro 1U and run #TrueNAS on it.

I actually might save money with this plan.

Should I just shoot myself now? Other 1U ideas? (Ext. noise, heat, and power are concerns.)

It looks as if Linux kernel 6.17 will have support for the #RaspberryPi5. It is expected to be released in mid-October 2025.

Looks as if #Linux 6.16 will have some more necessary components to boot on the #RPi5.

#Debian Trixie will be released with Linux 6.12 it seems; but once that's out 6.16 will probably be in Unstable soon.

Lately I've been doing more #SelfHosting again due to the current situation. Of course, I'm paying particular attention to power consumption and noise. After good experiences with the #ARM64 architecture, even with power-hungry applications such as Mastodon, I'm now using the smartphone technology for my homeservers, too.

There are #SBCs with more open hardware, but the #RaspberryPi is widely available, well documented, powerful and inexpensive. And it is available with up to 16 GB of RAM.

Anyone operating a server on the Internet must install #security updates quickly. However, many people forget to restart running software so that the new version runs instead of the old one. The #needrestart tool helps with this on Debian-based Linux systems, which unfortunately is usually not pre-installed.

On my Raspberry Pi 4, needrestart always runs correctly (automatically after apt upgrade). On my Raspberry Pi 5, however, I first had to create a configuration file as described by the main developer here:

Previously, the tool always claimed that a reboot was necessary because it thought an outdated Linux kernel was running.

Next, I want to activate #LUKS hard drive encryption on both raspis. Unfortunately, this is not as easy under #Raspbian or #RaspberryPiOS as on other Debian systems. If you have managed this: Please let me know how you did it!

In letzter Zeit mache ich aus gegebenem Anlass wieder mehr #SelfHosting. Natürlich achte ich dabei besonders auf den Stromverbrauch. Nach guten Erfahrungen mit der #ARM64-Architektur selbst bei leistungshungrigen Anwendungen wie Mastodon setze ich jetzt auch zuhause auf auf die aus Smartphones bekannte Technologie.

I do have Shelly Plug S available but I guess that I'd need a remote shutdown command before turning off power. Furthermore: how do I enable auto-boot when power resumes?
