To gauge the quality of a fruit harvest, you don't need to inspect every piece. Just examine a random sample. If the sample is large and varied enough, it will reflect the whole batch accurately.

A poor sample, though, can mislead more than a guess, giving a false sense of accuracy. Many judgments are based on such flawed samples, leading to incorrect conclusions.
