As a break( from posting about protected characteristics and the nature of institutional compliance, I have blogged about touch screens and their role in marginalizing disabled people, particularly those with sight impairment. It's on the long side :-)

Quote of the day, 29 April: Brother Lawrence

What consoles me in this life is that I see God by faith. And I see him in such a way that I can sometimes say, “I no longer believe, I see, for I experience what faith teaches.” With this assurance, and by this practice of faith, I will live and die with him.

Where in my life is God inviting me to trust Him so deeply that I begin to “see” by faith?

Minister for Equalities Kaukab Stewart has launched a pilot scheme providing free #rail travel for companions of blind and partially sighted individuals on all #ScotRail journeys across #Scotland, starting 1 April 2025. Announced at #Anniesland Station in Glasgow, the initiative allows those with an eye +1 National Entitlement Card to travel with a companion at no extra cost, aiming to enhance #accessibility and affordability for visually impaired passengers. Running for one year, the scheme aligns with existing concessionary travel policies for #buses and ferries in Scotland. Ms Stewart highlighted its importance for community access, education, and employment, while Craig Spalding, Chief Executive of #Sight Scotland, noted the significant achievement of the Fair Rail Campaign, emphasising the positive impact on independence and community connection for visually impaired individuals.

I have an #accessibility question for those who have difficulty with #sight and use #ScreenReaders.

1) What is the best way to offer you text-to-speech in my video game? Should I build it in myself? Or should I somehow make the text available to external screen reading plugins you already have installed?

2) What is the best way to enable text-to-speech? I'm trying to imagine how a blind person would find the toggle in a settings menu they can't see. The only way I can think of around that would be to enable it by default and have an option for users who don't want it to disable it at the beginning, but that sounds cumbersome. Is there a better middle option? Is there a commonly-used keyboard shortcut I can enable or something?

The #windows can be seen on the #GibraltarRock #cable-car #gondola. #ZoomedOut the #incline of the #misty #slope can be seen. #Zoom further away and the cabin can't be seen but it is still there.

I love #experiementing with my #Olympus #OpticalZoom but the #camera needs #servicing & I don't know where to trust. Suggestions?

With the average person’s screen time now nearly seven hours a day, and much of that time spent indoors, our overreliance on #sight and #sound has only intensified.

But given that humans are animals with five (or arguably many more) #senses, are we 🌟neglecting our other faculties, 🌟and what is it doing to us?

A total solar eclipse will move across the U.S. on Monday, April 8. People who are blind or visually impaired will be able to experience it as they grow colder and hear birdsong change along with the dimming light, but much of the effect is visual. Planetary scientists Cassandra Runyon and David Hurd have written a guide called “Getting a Feel for Eclipses,” which has tactile graphics that illustrate the paths of the 2017, 2023 and 2024 eclipses. They write for @TheConversationUS about why they made it, and how it works.

As anyone who's worked with me knows, I pay a lot of attention to the words we use. Seeking to identify where ableist usage creeps in, I pay attention to metaphors that assume certain capabilities. That led to this post biketoworkbarb.blogspot.com/20. Let me know if it makes you "see" (understand, perceive, recognize) things differently.
