ocratato<p>I was just watching a presentation by Casey Muratori at the Better Software Conference where he presents a very good history of object oriented programming. His main point is that inheritance and encapsulation can be counter productive for certain types of applications (such as games).</p><p>Back in March <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@RuthMalan" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>RuthMalan</span></a></span> posted a comparison of seemingly contradictory ideas by Jackson and Dijkstra.</p><p>In both of these the basic problem is that the low level coding constructs are leaking into the domain level. The domain level is a very messy place. Our coding constructs a mathematically rigid. </p><p>Our task as programmers is to analyse the domain to find the essential behaviour of the entities that are relevant for the problem we have been presented with. Then we design code that tries to interface (or replicate) that behaviour. </p><p>While languages like Java have inheritance, this is a coding construct. Trying to use it to model actual inheritance in a human family tree will probably end in tears.</p><p>Sometimes we can constrain the domain problem such that our code constructs can be used with only a thin interface. </p><p>More often we are going to need much more relaxed structures, such as graphs, or entity component systems.</p><p><a href="https://discuss.systems/tags/softwarearchitecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>softwarearchitecture</span></a> <a href="https://discuss.systems/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a></p>
