When I first watched the #Terminator movie, I thought (at that time, back in the 1980s) that it was clearly not a good outcome and should be avoided (obviously).

At that time, I would have never imagined that in the lead up to a Terminator scenario a bunch of right wing fuckwits would have been the ones paying for and overseeing the #AI development that allowed a Terminator scenario to actually arise. I had always thought the AI would have escaped from ‘well meaning’ scientists.

Now, when I look back at the Terminator movie, I think the popular take out message should have been:

‘kill every #billionaire, especially those who would fund AI development’.

Portal opens. Soldier steps out.

"Amanda Conner! I have come from the future to protect you from the Machines. The human resistance depends on you!"

"Uh... I'm John Conner."

Soldier checks doohickey.

"I see. I have gone too far back in time. See you in a few years." Soldier and portal disappear.

"Uh, wait, what?"

Against #AILiteracy: have we actually found a way to #ReverseLearning?

"So let’s get one thing out of the way: I think '#AI literacy' is a dangerous device of neoliberal education and it deserves to be dismissed out of hand.

"I don’t like that declaring this will immediately turn off half my audience, but I think it’s only fair to say it up front.

"This has a lot to do with my feelings about generative AI technologies, their developers, their #BloodDiamond genesis, and their ugly consequences for those who use them and those who are impacted by their use.

But it has a lot more to do with what literacy is."

“Empire of #AI”: #KarenHao on How AI Is Threatening #Democracy & Creating a New #Colonial World

June 04, 2025 via @DemocracyNow_Headlines_rss

"The new book #EmpireOfAI by longtime technology reporter Karen Hao unveils the accruing political and economic power of AI companies — especially Sam Altman’s OpenAI. Her reporting uncovered the #exploitation of #workers in #Kenya, attempts to take massive amounts of freshwater from communities in #Chile, along with numerous accounts of the technology’s detrimental impact on the environment. 'This is an extraordinary type of AI development that is causing a lot of #social, #labor and #environmental harms,' says Hao."

The way war is headed, plus autonomous drones that kill people and things without human decisions. Basically we're building #Skyrim.

"A missile is worth perhaps a million dollars and can kill maybe 12 or 20 people. But for one million dollars, you can buy 10,000 drones, put four grenades on each, and they will kill 1,000 or even 2,000 people or destroy 200 tanks.”

PREVIEW: THE TERMINATOR #8
The story of the darkest days of the war against the machines, and the grizzled veteran who helped guide John Conner to his ultimate victory over Skynet, comes full circle in this issue, leading inexorably to a final, fatal confrontation — or so it might seem!
