#towpath

We're back at the cottage in #PrestonBrook and, last night, took a walk down the #towpath of the #Bridgewater #Canal to the north portal of the #tunnel.

In almost the middle of nowhere it was a surprise to find a #bookexchange facility. I really wish I'd taken more notice of it, like how far it is from the tunnel mouth and whether it can be seen from a passing #boat. Not that I can imagine any passing boat would rush to moor and examine the bookcase's contents.

The new Wallace and Grommet claymation movie on BBC accurately sends up narrowboating with its high-speed boat chase, when a very aged person and her dog walking on the towpath slightly outpace the boats on the canal.

When I mentioned this to my friend D, he replied: "Ha ha. Yeah, we got passed by a lady in a motorized wheelchair this summer."

And last but not least not a tunnel: The Avon Aqueduct.

Both – the Falkirk Tunnel and the Avon Aqueduct – are a bit scary. The tunnel because of "slippery when wet and slimy" (I managed to cycle through though but I wouldn't do it again). The aqueduct because the paving is so rough and the tow path so narrow that you risk to fall into the canal.
