It was originally built in the 13th century and has since undergone multiple reconstructions due to wars, fires, and changing architectural styles. The castle sits on Castle Hill (Várhegy) and offers stunning panoramic views of the Danube River and Pest. First built in 1265 by King Béla IV to defend against Mongol invasions. It was expanded and renovated during the reign of King Matthias Corvinus (15th century) and later saw major Baroque-style reconstruction in the 18th century under Habsburg rule. Nowadays, Buda Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) is one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. It was the first permanent bridge to connect Buda and Pest across the Danube River, playing a crucial role in uniting the two sides of the city. The Chain Bridge is built between 1842 and 1849, designed by William Tierney Clark and constructed by Adam Clark (no relation), and it symbolized Hungary’s modernization and economic growth in the 19th century. The bridge was blown up by retreating German forces in 1945 and later rebuilt in 1949, on its 100th anniversary. The stone lions at each end of the bridge, sculpted by János Marschalkó, are famous. A local legend humorously claims that the lions have no tongues (but they actually do).
