“Canyon Narrows Light” — Soft, filtered light illuminates the walls of a Death Valley slot canyon.

Desert canyon light is remarkable. A canyon like this one is a huge contrast with the world outside — the intense, harsh desert light gives way to soft, gentle light and shade. The temperature drops. The color of the ight changes, too. Deep in the canyon it often shifts to ward blue, especially when the canyon walls are black or gray. There are also changes and contrasts where different softs of light come together — as in this photograph where the deeply shaded blue tones contrast with the warmer tones of the higher walls…continues: gdanmitchell.com/2025/04/02/ca

Not content to just photograph a lake that's so remote that fewer than 50 people ever get to visit it each year, I actually got in the lake with a waterproof camera, and photographed it with the camera partially submerged (and me in up to the neck to avoid being eaten alive by sandflies).
I think some of the photos I took with my DSLR from dry land are better, but given the epic mission to get here, I've reserved what I think is the best full-HD image for my Patreon, (https://www.patreon.com/posts/lake-mccrae-125636143 )
Obviously for a 3 day trek over a high mountain pass, I took many other photos, but may get paid to write up the adventure, so I need to wait before I share any other photos.

A cute litter of #raccoons in the outhouse while living on the #farm to prep for international development placement with CIDA. We left them alone for a bit so that the mother could come and move them to another quiet spot.

It always surprises me how much open water you can find, even in the middle of -30°C temperatures. Somehow, these small streams stay open for long periods, even in extreme cold. For us hikers, they always present a challenge, as crossing them over snow bridges or even ice is always an unknown danger.

‘Islet’

Limited edition

A baby tree sprouts from an islet of moss in the bark of an ancient King Billy pine. It’s these ancient forest giants I fear for the most in these wildfires in the North.

I’ve completed a little video that walks through the show you can find it on my YouTube channel. Look for The Elm & the Raven…

It’s most pleasing to know that these pieces I put so much love into creating, still light me up when I see them.

I hope that joy they give me is somehow transmitted to you when you see them. They are better, in the flesh, so to speak, but being able to share them in any format is a lovely thing.

Islet is available directly from the gallery or online.

I never accepted the religion I was raised with. Eventually I realized that my religion waited outdoors, where I discovered a faith I could live by. The music and sacred architecture of the natural world touched me more profoundly than any church. The gods that haunted forests and ridgetops spoke truths I never heard in church. I found this faith most meaningfully in national parks.

Sacred Wonderland · Finding Religion in National ParksI discovered a spiritual reality outdoors in nature and a religion that I could accept and embrace. I found this religion in national parks.
This river crossing is from my solo hike in the Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area last January. These always give me sweaty palms, especially when I'm hiking alone in the winter and dragging a heavy pulka, or in this case, two pulkas behind me. On my recent solo winter hikes, I've been pulling two pulkas, as this allows me to lower the center of gravity on the larger Fjellpulken, making it harder for it to fall over.

“The wild-often dismissed as savage and chaotic by "civilized" thinkers, is actually impartially, relentlessly, and beautifully formal and free. Its expression-the richness of plant and animal life on the globe including us, the rainstorms, windstorms, and calm spring mornings-is the real world, to which we belong.”

―Gary Snyder, The Practice of the Wild
