The fact that no one ever debates what the definition of a “man” is says it all about the recent UK Supreme Court judgement.
Transphobia is deeply rooted in misogyny.
It’s the idea that women should look a certain way, based on sexist ideas of female sexuality through the male gaze, and should act a certain way, based on a patriarchal belief system.
It’s the idea women are only good for procreation and satisfying men sexually.
That’s why we never hear about trans men.
@Anitambyrne and people who judge trans women by their physical features are telling us they do that with all women.
I'm a cis disabled woman and I have noticed how often transphobes very quickly jump to outright ableism in their attacking trans folk. Accusations of "being insane/deluded" MH-isms through to surgery, dilation, scars and meds-shaming.
Scratch a TERF and ableism and racism are right there too. All these things are connected and we need to keep remembering that.
@NatalyaD @Anitambyrne they really are.
Very often transphobia is just the first thing someone will come out with, of a whole set of terrible positions, because it's the easiest thing to get away with. Then they start seeing what else they can get away with.
If you show people the door as soon as you hear that nonsense, you never even have to hear the other stuff.
@NatalyaD @Anitambyrne (I do think otherwise sound people can have unkind opinions about this, but they tend not to go campaign about it)
@davey_cakes @Anitambyrne yup. The nazi bar principle. Transphobia can 'seem' reasonable to the unfamiliar, then they shift the narrative.
Just like anti immigration is an acceptable form of racism.
@Anitambyrne the SC judgement did not decide on the definition of a woman, it only decided on what definition was used in one specific law. The press could be reporting this as the law being wrong and in urgent need of being updated to include trans women, but instead report it as "trans women are men". Which is obviously ludicrous, and obviously in contradiction with the GRA. Also the concept of "biological woman" used by the SC is highly questionable and crying out for a definition. Good luck with that!
@Anitambyrne@mastodon.ie I am in the US, and haven't once heard anyone complain about a trans masc individual attempting to play on a boys sports team because they, by the transphobe logic, would have a huge disadvantage. It isn't about "safety", or "fairness" - it is rooted in misogyny.
They sometimes mention transmen
but mostly in support of your overall claim, because it's only in terms of the loss of wombs for the white patriarchy.
@Anitambyrne
I personally know a handful of trans men. They are men.
While this is true, I think it's also part of the patriarchy's belief in what a "man" is supposed to be.
Men are supposed to be emotionless, macho, violent tough guys and effeminate men aren't "real men." So they come up with lies about there being a "crisis in masculinity" when there's just a preconceived notion of what "men" are.
And trans women are the ultimate expression of that imaginary "crisis" in their eyes.
One of the most glaring examples of this is that for the longest time, men were never given a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, which is characterized by extreme emotional dysregulation.
Men, simply put, weren't supposed to have the kinds of extreme emotions people with BPD exhibit.
@Anitambyrne Yeah it's only quite recently that the presence of trans men was even admitted by anti-trans folk - and that only through pressure.
@Anitambyrne
I'm just a Blåhaj, so I don't really understand what this is about. Why should a judge say how I should behave based on what my body looks like? My shark body is my business and so is my behavior, as long as I don't bite somebody...
@BruceShark
@hapi @Anitambyrne Sorry Hapi, I try not to talk politics on here. It just shows how silly this week's news is.
Rainbow says hello and sends hugs though
@BruceShark
Big cuddles for Rainbow, for you and for @Anitambyrne too!
It is OK. Humans do stupid things all the time, but sometimes so stupid that we shonks have to deal with it. For some unexplainable reason, humans seem to keep forgetting that the meaning of life is cuddling, but we are here to remind them...
@Anitambyrne @StrangeNoises Well said! Would like to add that some people are claiming that the ruling doesn’t apply to trans men; it does, and so do Baroness Falkner’s decrees about “single sex spaces”. So while most of us are much less likely to be in physical danger in public spaces compared to trans women, it is just as degrading.
@Anitambyrne Also because those men don't see that to be a problem.
If a trans man has to use a female space, that is a problem for those females, and since they don't give a rats ass about females in general, no point mentioning it.
@Anitambyrne I second this. To me another strong tell of this is the following: Women are now okay to wear trousers. After a long fight to be accepted as aspiring to be human, wear trousers if you must. But a man wearing a skirt is a Scot or just ridiculous. Absolutely dehumanizingly unacceptable.
We have a long way to go.
@Anitambyrne
A trans woman is a woman.
A trans man is a man.
Why do so many have problems with this? What freaking business is it of theirs?
I like the points you've made.
I was pondering the other day why the bigoted and vile humans that are all up in arms about who uses what bathroom are not insisting that trans men use the ladies' room, or about trans men in sports. Don't get me wrong, I know that trans men also face a whole lot of judgment and discrimination - we just don't hear the politicians going on about it the way they do with trans women.
@Anitambyrne It’s the assumption that a trans woman is just a man dressed as a woman to gain advantage ogling or assaulting women. That’s just a perverted man. A trans woman in my experience is more often someone who associates with feminine aspects of themselves and is absolutely no threat to women whatsoever, but rather an ally. Competitive sport is different, but there are lots of advantages one group may have over another not necessarily based on gender or “biological sex”.
@Anitambyrne two of my nieces are transitioning, they have already taken male names. They self identify as male. Has any thought been given to them with all this furore about 'women only toilets' ?
@Anitambyrne we *absolutely* hear about trans men, when they talk about their "daughters" being swayed into mutilating their bodies by gender ideology, *they're talking about trans men*
Books discussing this have been international bestsellers and transphobic writers like Jesse Singal, who has been cited by JK Rowling, has made a career from anti-transmasculinity as well as transmisogyny
The recent court case in the UK explicitly mentions trans men as well as trans women if I'm not mistaken
They absolutely do talk about us and aim violence at us, you are just aiding in our erasure by closing your eyes to it
@so_treu @Anitambyrne
And let's not remember bathrooms.
All of it is bound up with patriarchal ideals, hegemonic binary gender roles, and (I think most importantly) fascists playing on prejudice to consolidate power. Fear trans women on sports teams. Fear trans men in bathrooms. Fear and hate. And it absolutely does not stop with only one category of marginalized people.
@Anitambyrne I am going to err on the side of that you meant well.
We are explicitly mentioned in the verdict as also not being allowed in women's facilities. Because we're trans.
The campaigns against teen surgeries are wholly against trans men because the only teen surgery performed at this time is top surgery (which cis guys can get as teenagers btw if they have breast growth, which is fairly common).
The TERFs absolutely hate us. They just tend to make like we've got mental health problems instead of being dangerous. If it was up to them (according to their literature) we'd probably all be sectioned.
