I never track rations unless in specific situation where the PCs face an unexpectedly long trip. However, they have to pay for a reasonable amount of rations at each town. It's just a buy-a-bunch-and-it's-fine system.
They can carry Str score rations. I don't generally bother unless doing a survival game or stressing that bit.
