She ripped into institutions: state, church, pope, patriarchy, the predatory men around her. She was 'immature', 'ungracious', 'mad' for using her mournful, ecstatic voice to call out hypocrisy & abuse. She rejected the rot of piety, gave us new vocabulary, made it safer to talk about abortion, loss, trauma & hope. She trailblazed through hostility, shone a light, was a light.
She is such a loss to us.

I've been listening to her interviews & music all night. She was so honest, funny, wild like a horse, generous like a survivor who turns to saving others. She's in us. Mandinka exploded my preteen brain - this girl, this Irish punk! Her power! She took on Yeats, U2 & sean nós, made them all hers. Each performance a grenade, never easy, never conventional, never contrived.
