On 18 February 1943 Hans and Sophie Scholl, part of the White Rose group of peaceful protesters against the Nazi regime, were arrested at the University of Munich. They were later executed by guillotine. They were 24 and 21 years old.

[Edited to correct Sophie's age.]

@bullivant

And German society was angry at them for years, even after '45.
The still openly fascists, for obvious reasons.
The ex-fascists that had declared themselves as "regular citizens, victims of Hitler", too.
And the "silent majority" (the bunch of people that always looks the other way, since they are not directly affected) could not stand that there were examples of people that had done the right thing.

So the people that had actually resisted the nazis had a tough time and suffered a kind of ostracism.

@earthworm That is interesting. I wasn't aware of the lingering anger and ostracism against them after the war.

@bullivant @earthworm
Always surprised there isn't a well-known white rose antifa symbol to this day.

"How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause... It is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go."
- the last words of Sophie Scholl

@RhinosWorryMe Very moving words. Thank you for sharing.

@WendyMsGator @bullivant and best way to remember is to never, ever let it happen again… to anyone, any group…

@bullivant In a "quiet" political environment, with almost no dissent, even a little bit causes big problems. Shortwave radio against the Soviets, and mailed out pamphlets against the Nazis caused big problems for both.

That is why we have a noisy political environment with every possible lie being told at once. Can you imagine anyone having an impact today by mailing out pamphlets to people chosen from the phone book, like the Scholls did? Nowadays dissent is fought mostly by drowning it out.

@bullivant Sophie's last words are so haunting as I remember this story. Very sad. :(

@Dianora Sad, but also extraordinarily courageous. They knew the risks they were taking but went ahead anyway when the vast majority of the population just kept their heads down.

@bullivant They were. History could have been so different.
