Important notice for #Mastodaoine who are not citizens of Ireland.
There are two important votes coming up next year - the Local Elections and the EU Elections.
You do not have to be a citizen of Ireland to vote in these elections.
Citizens of other EU countries resident in Ireland can vote in the EU Elections, all residents can vote in the Local Elections regardless of citizenship.
You must, of coures, be over 18, and registered to vote.
Register here: https://www.checktheregister.ie/en-IE/
@ccferrie sort a row out for me please will you? My pal is here 20 years. from Australia. Working as a nurse. He insists he can’t vote here. I say he can. Which is it?
@daithimacthomais He should be eligible to vote in Local Elections (Councils) but he needs to register.
He can find more info here: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/government-in-ireland/elections-and-referenda/voting/right-to-vote/
@daithimacthomais @ccferrie every adult legally resident can register for and then vote in local elections.
I'd make this the rule for Dáil elections too. We allow uk citizens vote in them despite everything but not EU/non-eu
Should be representation to go with taxation
@ColmDonoghue This.
There's too much talk about giving non-resident Irish citizens the vote, but not enough about giving the vote to non-Irish residents @daithimacthomais @ccferrie
@Koochulainn @ColmDonoghue @daithimacthomais I don't think the two are mutually exclusive
@ccferrie This is an important PSA post/ thread, Mastodaoine - in your work, community, and neighbourhood circles, make sure to get the word out: EU citizens resident in Ireland can vote in EU elections here, and our Local Elections are open to all residents. But you must be over 18 and registered. #PSA #IrishPol #RegisterToVote #CheckTheRegister #EUParl #LocalElections #EUParl2024 #LocalElections2024 #Mastodaoine #GetTheVoteOut
