re. "moral panics"
"In 2019 we assisted 721 tourists; to date this year we've assisted slightly more, which is 782 tourists. So, while there's an increase, it's not a huge increase; but July and August have been particularly busy for us."

It's very telling that RTÉ News platforms a Garda representative group's spokesperson and a business lobby org, rather than - say - local stakeholders and community groups, anti-poverty orgs, healthcare workers, etc.
"There's nothing that makes people feel more comfortable thank seeing a Guard [patrolling] on the street."
- Richard Guiney, CEO of Dublin Town, 23 August 2023.
Speak for yourself, Richard.

@clickhere hang on is she saying that there’s been more need for tourist assistance in the year so far than there was in the whole 2019?
@Padjo It seemed that way - but their 2019 Annual Report states that ITAS assisted 1024 tourists in total (over 579 cases/incidents, of which 358 crimes were involved).
@clickhere ah that makes more sense! Defo missing a “at this point in 2019” somewhere in there! Thanks for checking
@Padjo No probs. It was a bit weird to me, too (even with my aversion to even the simplest arithmetic).
@clickhere @Padjo Like they opened an ITAS office/Garda Station on O'Connell Street this year, so it's hardly a surprise that there's more people using the service since it's now visible.
But I guess it must mean the sky is falling
