Hang on - whaaat!? "Plants can 'hear' bees buzzing and serve up more nectar when they are nearby, scientists have found. Amazingly, they can tell the difference between a bee’s buzz and that of a non-pollinating insect such as a wasp."
That is AMAZING.

@clickhere Here's to all Vegans who think they don't eat a living being only because we can't see or hear plants cry.
@regineheidorn @clickhere And they might even like the smell of fresh cutt grass, which (IIRC) is a chemical they emit when damaged.
@Johns_priv @clickhere Yes - plants cry silently and we don't see faces in pain. But they do cry and they feel and react to pain. And they're also grown in mass monocultures. So if anyone thinks eating plants is preventing pain ...
@regineheidorn @clickhere That's why I always thought the excuse a bit hypocritical.
As a meat eater I choose places where they treat the animals as 'humane' as possible and have stopped eating some things that were done violently (like pâté)
@Johns_priv @clickhere This. Same here.
If you eat something you cause pain, no excuse. There is of course more or less pain and avoidable pain - so avoiding where possible is fine. But food without pain is not possible.
It is revealing how people react if they're told that plants also feel pain. I agree with you - hypocritical.
@regineheidorn @Johns_priv @clickhere It's a different manifestation of something I've noticed myself - people horrified by the idea of hunting for meat, but who cheerfully eat battery farmed pigs and chickens.
@regineheidorn Poor plants. (Poor everything, for that matter..)

@DelilahTech Oh! Thank you so much.
Wasps are pollinators.
One again big bee is at it to ruin the reputation of the industrious wasp! :3
@irick No! I didn't know this. Damn those shneaky bees, and their Guardian transcribers.
@clickhere does @TheGuardian not link to sources?
@tsyum @TheGuardian I cannot say for sure, but they absolutely should.

Plants are sentient. They just don’t move around much.
@SurrealSeal @clickhere yup, they know what's going on around them. It's just a very different form of life from us animals. I love them.
@SurrealSeal They are - I don't think humans, with our usual hubris, give them the credit and respect they deserve. (At least some scientists are finally discovering/confirming important things about plants in recent years.)
@clickhere
Planta Sapiens (Paco Calvo) is a good read on the subject. Very interesting and thought provoking.
@SurrealSeal Oh wonderful, thank you!
Hi honey, I'm home! The traffic today was unbearable.
