AND 4 of the big five publishers sign letter urging Congress to restore #imls
..."Notably, HarperCollins, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
was the only Big Five publisher not to sign the letter. As of this
writing, HarperCollins reps have yet to respond to a request for comment."
I read the link but still none the wiser about what IMLS is?
@ewen Institute of Museum and Library Services, they are a source of information, coordination, and critically issue hundreds of competitive grants each year in response to proposals from libraries and museums, that support a lot of public museum and library program development in the United States.
Edit to add link I forgot, which explains the laws and processes around their governance and funding by Congress...

Definitely what @mtechman said
I do think it's a bit off most folks radar. Like, it's not called "The Public Library Department" or something and as you noticed, coverage does tend to use the acronym that everyone working in libraryworld knows it as, IMLS.
Library associations and groups like @everylibrary are doing a lot of very good work to organize reactions to this attack, and also work to help rally attention and support against book banning and such at state and local level.
@gl33p @everylibrary @ewen #EveryLibrary is a fantastic well-organized nonprofit!
@ewen
If you search "IMLS" and "news", you'll see a lot of info.
It funds library grants in all states, including a program that matters a lot, the services for the blind.

@mtechman now how about #ControlledDigitalLending and see what they have to say about democracy and citizens’ right to read, think, and learn freely, and their "unwavering” support for libraries
@danamcfarland 0 out of 5 of the Big Five?
