Historians, an unusual (?) one for you
According to my parents, my great-grandparents (Strabane at this point, I think, but not 100%) were married following a possibly obscure tradition called ‘a compromising’
The gist of it is that for some reason they couldn’t marry so the mock sight of them heading out together overnight in plain sight was deliberately staged making marriage the only answer to such a scandal
