In response to the US elections, Tom Watson tweeted: "We need to talk about how the far right holds an iron grip on the media narrative in American politics. Yesterday, almost every media outlet and scores of political reporters followed that narrative off the cliff. They all look like fools this morning"

Anthony has written about SF's potential drift to the right, most recently: thepensivequill.com/2022/11/ou

And the Taoiseach noted SF's agile ability in riding 2 horses. >

TPQOur Own Alone

I can't recall who but others have noted SF's embrace of Trump style tactics. I mention this because SF definitely benefits from far right internet agitation on issues.

I'm not saying SF are far right, please don't misunderstand. They are populists, and they are populists with a large & long Catholic nationalist base & history. They are in large measure one of the main reasons the far right has a low ceiling in Ireland.   >

In relation to Watson's tweet, I'm wondering if something similar is going on here, the amplification of SF in the media as a result of polling (which they have always done better at) and their use of social media. They know how to game the platforms and are very good at it.

Is the media here falling for the hype, and creating a circle of amplification? >

The wisest thing SF has been doing of late has been being somewhat quiet. "The absence from the plinth" has been commented on in different outlets. It's not a tactic employed solely to hide from bad press; I think SF has recognised - & maybe their falling poll numbers indicate - that their constant anti-everything shtick and tendency to hector is wearing thin. >

Anthony and Carrie McIntyre

As much as they are beating the "change" drum, they've some ways to go before an election. If they've already hit their peak, when will the media catch up?
