Today in Techbros failing to understand consent:

The Microsoft overlords parachuted into management of the 5e, 5.5e and dnd brand are automatically updating character sheets made using DnDBeyond.

Just a simple tick box of "would you like to do this?" And they'd get a lot of happy compliance but, they don't get consent and won't care that you just don't change someone's character sheet without permission.

It. Is. Not. Done.

@dnd

Bell of Lost Souls · D&D Beyond Will Rollout New 5.5E Rules - Whether You Like It Or NotD&D Beyond has revealed how the update to the 5.5E Ruleset will play out, letting players know what they will - and won't - have access to.

@Homebrewandhacking

That seems very awkward and avoidable.

New sheets, not so bad, but existing ones? Mid-campaign? Silly.

@davey_cakes

I would be fuming if this happened to a game I was running.

1. You don't change players' sheets without asking.

2. What if I don't like the updates? Like say for great weapon master?

There's never been a worse time to run Hasbro 5e.

@Homebrewandhacking it does seem to be coming at a time where there's tons of good sheet apps on the go.

@davey_cakes

I find it all bewildering to be honest.

I've also just read the rules for Shadowdark today and they're sort of breathtaking.

I'm honestly very impressed by how modern and elegant they are.

It's like the design process of

Simple, crude

Complicated, sophisticated

Simple, sophisticated <-- you are here.

@oblomov

I'm a journalist, for want of a better word, who reports on the industry weekly as I have done for seven years.

So, you can take my word for it or have a search for "C suite executives" at Hasbro and "Xbox".

I never claim "secret knowledge" as some punks have accused me, I am literally just paying attention.

@Homebrewandhacking @dnd I once considered including in a campaign I was running a bit of gender bending and other weird effects (reversible, but with effort) from an ancient sorcerer's abandoned lair where all the traps had rotted and warped over thousands of years, but noped out of it in the end for basically this reason.

@Homebrewandhacking @dnd also I've just realised, my current campaign's players rely on a mix of handmade character sheets and D&D Beyond characters via the app on their phones. So when this rolls out, half the party will be playing from a different version from the other half? And the ones who have both printed sheet and online will potentially have their own character be incompatible with itself?

Fucking ARGH

@http_error_418 @dnd

I'm really sorry to hear you're being done dirty. That's no way to treat a paying customer. 😞

@Homebrewandhacking @dnd

One of the bigger marital arguments I've ever witnessed began as a dispute over character sheets. One partner, who was GMming, felt that she wanted to collect in character sheets to hold onto them between sessions. The other partner, who was playing, felt that he wanted to hold onto his sheet between sessions. It got shouty. It got ugly. People take character sheets seriously.

As you say, this is simply not done.

Then again, to a Microsoft mindset, leaving your customers feeling good about the service you're providing is leaving money on the table: what's the point of having locked-in customers if you can't exploit them?

@passenger @dnd

*smh* there's never been a worse time to run Hasbro dnd. It feels like they're just _trying_ to make the DMs life suck.

@passenger @Homebrewandhacking @dnd
But how is that even exploitation. Where is the profit coming from here?

@duckwhistle @passenger @dnd hey

I didn't say anything about exploitation, I was pointing out the consent violation of assuming consent.

@passenger @Homebrewandhacking @dnd never underestimate the data mining potential of having more than one character sheet for one person. 🤷‍♂️

@Homebrewandhacking @dnd @Faintdreams they can take my much scribbled on and coffee stained paper character sheets from my cold, dead hands!

@satsuma @dnd @Faintdreams

Big fan of paper for character sheets for many reasons. This has given me a new unexpected one.

It feels like a very "computer game" rather than TTRPG mindset.

@Homebrewandhacking @dnd i have beaten wholesale amounts of ass for a far sight less. No.
