What if a car breaks down or an ambulance needs to get past in heavy traffic on this 2 way road in the Dublin inner suburbs?
@OisinOConnor That looks like my neighbourhood in #Dubin8 #Tenters where the high-rise, #chickencoop short term let, construction site crews park up on pavement blocking both #ambulances and #blind folks, #women with buggies, people in #Wheelchairs or #crutches
@anneeroper the white lines are a surprisingly effective tool at getting people to keep their vehicles on the road. Other than that, proper parking enforcement needed.
@OisinOConnor My impression from 20 years of doing #NADA about the problem including planning is that #DublinCityCouncil cares not one whit... The irony is that most residents walk everywhere because we're 10 minutes from #GraftonStreet and or a grocery store/shops by foot but the Mon to Fri illegal commuter & construction parking even makes school walks a danger nightmare... #RatRunCity #Dublin8 #TentersParkingNightmare
@anneeroper your own local TD and myself (I'm in a different area though) have been raising this constantly. Under this govt the fine increased from €40 to €80 and Dublin City Council have finally been pushed into a stricter enforcement regime by green councillors on the transport committee. https://patrickcostello.ie/2022/02/21/green-party-tds-and-councillors-question-why-gardai-continue-to-barely-enforce-illegal-footpath-parking/
@OisinOConnor @anneeroper Increased fines are just ink on paper unless gardaí do enforcement.
We have a proud Irish tradition of pristine laws, many of them barely used.
@faduda @OisinOConnor @anneeroper Took me ten years to realize Ireland is basically The Purge. Crime is grand.
@Fuzzbizz @faduda @anneeroper *if it's crime with your car
@OisinOConnor @faduda @anneeroper No, most crime. Cut turf from a protected bog? Whatever. Build without planning (something I'm actually sympathetic to admittedly) - just get retention. Fell centuries-old trees without licence? Destroy hedge out of season? Who cares! Violate EU ruling indicating that "local needs" is blatantly discriminatory? Well the councils have been breaking that one for a decade! Flagrantly violate GDPR? Ah this is Ireland we'll look out for you (our DPC is a joke).
@OisinOConnor Yes, I'm aware but sadly the issues persist...
@OisinOConnor @anneeroper On the down side, painted lines offer zero protection to cyclists.
https://usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/protect-yourself-separated-bike-lanes-means-safer-streets-study-says/
@faduda @anneeroper I'm well aware. Just mean that many examples show that where lines are painted on road to designate car parking spots, drivers tend to park within them rather than the old 2 wheels on the path/grass verge.
@OisinOConnor @anneeroper
Drivers respect other drivers.
Everyone else, good luck.
