In comparing how I can stretch an "almost €0" budget for Magic the Gathering and feel out how I enjoy playing the game I'm trying it's original cardboard format, MTG Online (the first digital adaptation with purchasable cards) and MTG Arena (the more recent one that unlike MTGO has mobile game design conventions as far as the eye can see).

The other obvious-to-try one would be proxies but I don't have a regular playgroup. No-go for now.

None are without disadvantages.

Face-to-face cardboard has something digital versions lack, but also has "least availability" for playing a game.

MTGO has absurdly generous card availability & open market for play but the UI for the client is dated to the point it seems more sabotage than neglect.

MTGA gets sometime support with digital versions when a cardboard deck is purchased with codes for unlocking the decks, but rules and playstyles are limited & no 2nd hand market to get rid of cards.

"Almost €0" for 'original cardboard MTG' (I need a better term...) means having trade binder and swapping with other players and ordering from websites really. Anything new is quickly outside the ~€0.

There's tutorials for optimising a free-to-play strategy to not pay for lootboxes; it can be done. To me it looks like it's less-fun-by-design. Otherwise: pay. Still, codes for redeeming decks do get sold.

MTGO tutorials have... "here's how you get free cards" and the penny dreadful format.

Just back from and had a fantastic time altogether, even if the pre-constructed beginners deck I bought (Grave Danger) really struggled without a fifth land.

Got my first volcano foil in the booster which I'm pleased with since as of right now I still probably don't have enough volcano to run a commander red-only deck from bits and pieces, though I'd probably benefit more improving what I have in black/blue zombies.

Would definitely recommend at in Dublin.
