On 18 February 1943 Hans and Sophie Scholl, part of the White Rose group of peaceful protesters against the Nazi regime, were arrested at the University of Munich. They were later executed by guillotine. They were 24 and 21 years old.
[Edited to correct Sophie's age.]
@bullivant In a "quiet" political environment, with almost no dissent, even a little bit causes big problems. Shortwave radio against the Soviets, and mailed out pamphlets against the Nazis caused big problems for both.
That is why we have a noisy political environment with every possible lie being told at once. Can you imagine anyone having an impact today by mailing out pamphlets to people chosen from the phone book, like the Scholls did? Nowadays dissent is fought mostly by drowning it out.
@mike805 Good point.
