Dr Mary McAuliffe

A story - 1921 - 'A Derry girl who, wanting to be in fashion, got her hair "bobbed", had an unpleasant experience in Donegal, to which she went on holiday'. She was well-known in area but this time people were being unpleasant to her - so much so she had to cut short her holiday. It was ‘all due to the “bobbed” hair which caused her to be regarded with suspicion as one who had been deprived of her locks because of associations with Crown Forces'.

2/ So fashionably "bobbed" hair was problematic for women during the War of Independence! In fact, an IRA man complained about it, 'Dame Fashion' he said, meant that 'bobbed' hair no longer marked a 'girl' as one who was company keeping with police! The fashion for bobbed hair however didn’t do much to stop republicans, Crown Forces and especially in 1922 B Specials from continuing to attack and forcibly hair crop women! is unfortunately always in fashion.
