Niamh Garvey

This week I launched a book, signed dozens of books in bookshops, was interviewed about being autistic for the Irish Times (published today), had a photographer come to the house, travelled to another city, spoke to multiple strangers.

I also got overwhelmed and cried on a city street, lost the ability to speak for one hour, felt anxiety to point of body shaking, woke in night with anxious thought spirals, felt increased sensory sensitivity.

This is

@actuallyautistic

@niamhgarvey I so feel this.

Congrats on your book launch. I hope you have the recovery time you need.

@niamhgarvey Thank you for everything you do for the community. 🫂

@niamhgarvey @actuallyautistic
Hopefully you've got plenty of recovery time planned. :bear_hugs:

@pathfinder @actuallyautistic I will recover indeed. Not complaining, just think it's important the share the ups and downs to show the balance.

@niamhgarvey @actuallyautistic

Delighted to see your latest book and exciting events but sorry to hear it's come at a cost to you. I hope you can get some recovery and low-demand time to catch up with yourself soonest.

@NatalyaD @actuallyautistic Oh I will. I know to expect overwhelm. Still worth it.

@niamhgarvey @actuallyautistic Glad it isn't unexpected, I wish there were ways you could be Amazing Publicity Author which didn't have such a cost to you though.

Our uni library has got Looking after your Autistic Self in now so I can recommend it to studes. I should go and see what else I can propose we obtain as they're keen to have a good collection of books useful for disabled students.

@niamhgarvey @actuallyautistic I'm really keen to promote good work like yours by people with lived-experience for others with similar experiences (and allies).

For too long many autism books were written by not-clearly autistic writers which is fine, but it's a different framing.

(I try and do the same for other impairment groups too!).

@NatalyaD @actuallyautistic you are a brilliant advocate and ally. I feel I have learnt loads from you.
