@Lassielmr @Wen why would anyone enter the #USA without a #DiplomaticPassport & - Immunity?

  • OFC #Diplomats can be kicked out anytime for any reason and it's common to do so as a gesture of disapproval of someones' foreign policy and alongside banning said personnel from reentry ("persona non grata") is the harshest penalty as per vienna diplomatic convention.

Again, if @europarl_en / @EUCommission found someone daring enough to do #diplomatic work w/o the legal protections then I'd say "good luck"...

  • I'd just not do that as a matter of principle given the fact that #CPB isn't even bound to #visa and can decline entry and deport sb. with no legal recourse for the affected individuals!

Day 26 cont 🥔🤓🇮🇩

#Indonesia’s ambassador met with senior #Australian #diplomats on Tuesday as the nation was thrust into an election campaign debate about a potential #Russian military presence in the region – and on the same day #AnthonyAlbanese accused #PeterDutton of damaging the bilateral relationship.

Indonesia’s ambassador to Australia, Dr #SiswoPramono, met with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (#DFAT) deputy secretary, #MichelleChan, who leads its south-east Asian policy division. One diplomatic source said Indonesia requested the meeting.

The meeting has been described by multiple sources as part of a regular series of engagements between #Pramono and #Chan, who is also responsible for managing the department’s diplomatic relationship with Indonesia.”

Major structural changes to #State would be accompanied by #layoffs of both career #diplomats, known as foreign service officers, & #CivilService employees, who usually work in the dept’s HQ in DC…. The dept would begin putting large numbers of workers on paid leave & sending out notices of termination….

The draft #Trump EO calls for ending the foreign service exam for aspiring diplomats, & it lays out new criteria for hiring, including “alignment with the president’s foreign policy vision.”

Trump talks ‘#FreeSpeech’ while moving to muzzle those he disagrees with

By Kevin Rector
Jan. 26, 2025

- As part of a broader rollout of executive orders, President Trump called for an end to government censorship, including on social media.
- Critics said they found the order absurd given Trump’s long record attacking speech and his other actions aimed at curtailing the speech of journalists, government experts, LGBTQ+ people and others.

"In one of his first acts in office, President Trump issued an executive order promising to end government censorship and restore free speech.

"The order accused the outgoing Biden administration of harassing social media companies and violating the rights of ordinary Americans “under the guise” of combating disinformation online, and said federal resources would no longer be used to “unconstitutionally abridge the free speech of any American citizen.”

"The order echoed a recurring theme from Trump’s campaign — that liberals across the federal government are censoring conservative voices to advance their own '#woke' agenda — and immediately resonated with his followers.

"'This order is a critical step to ensure the government cannot dictate what speech is permissible or weaponize private entities to enforce censorship,' said Mark Trammell of the Center for American Liberty, a conservative rights group founded by California attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon, Trump’s nominee to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. [Oh, but it's OKAY for Trump & crew to censor others?!!]

"However, many others said they found Trump’s order absurd — both because of his long track record of attacking speech he doesn’t like, and because of his new administration’s simultaneous efforts to muzzle people it disagrees with, including #journalists, federal #HealthOfficials, #teachers, #diplomats, #ClimateScientists and the #LGBTQ+ community." [And now they are doing it by cutting FUNDING!!!]

How representative is the case of Al-Ḥāǧǧ Yūsuf?

Bono #diplomats had different backgrounds. Some were relatives to the sultans, such as the already mentioned Idrīs b. Muḥammad or Cidi Ismael who went to Tripoli in 1655. Other #ambassadors were slaves or eunuchs, and then there were traders. All these people had somehow close personal bonds to the ruler.

The case of al-Ḥāǧǧ Yūsuf reveals another common characteristic of many Sahelian ambassadors in the 16th century: their shared experience of the ḥaǧǧ, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. (5/5)

The situation is quite different for #Congo.

After the christianisation of the kingdom, #diplomats were dispatched to the #pope

“The problem for Congolese #ambassadors was that their route to #Rome inexorably passed through #Portugal (as they had to take ships to reach #Europe and all the ships were Portuguese), but that once in Lisbon, the Portuguese were extremely reluctant to let the Congolese out of their sphere of influence and so kept them in Portugal. [...] Portugal guarded its power over the Congo jealously, and it is not coincidental that Congolese ambassadors started appearing in Rome only after Portugal's annexation by #Spain in 1580,” as Lowe explains. 1549 marks the birth of the #earlyModern Russian foreign office. Founded by tsar Ivan IV the institution developed into the Ambassadorial Chancery during the latter half of the 16th century.

The Ambassadorial Chancery was responsible for organising the reception of foreign #embassies, conducting preliminary negotiations, drawing up instructions for Russian #emdiplomats and working with their reports, registering foreign merchants and artisans living in #Russia, managing #Moscow settlements inhabited by them and special courtyards for receiving #diplomats. Papal #emdiplomacy is very unique. One has to differentiate between legations and permanent nunciatures. Papal #diplomats – legates as well as nuncios – differed from other secular diplomats, as it was their task to represent the Apostolic See on a spiritual and a secular level. But just like other diplomats papal envoys’ main tasks were representing, negotiating and of course reporting. As Alexander Koller discusses in his article, the first ever comprehensive summary on the development of papal diplomacy:

After his return to #Antwerp in 1609, #Rubens was appointed #court painter of Albert VII of #Austria and his wife Isabella Clara Eugenia of #Spain, the sovereigns of the #Habsburg #Netherlands. However, he once again combined his artistic activities with #emdiplomacy.

During his stay in #Paris due to his work on the #Medici cycle he also collected (secret) information, a core tasks of all #diplomats, thus acting as “noble spy” as #emdiplomats also were called. (3/6)

Like many other #emdiplomats he then moved from administration to #emdiplomacy. Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads’s diplomatic career started with less important missions to #Prussia and as the Emperor’s representative at the Polish #court. In 1643 he was appointed Imperial resident minister at the #HighPorte, where he died in 1648.

It is, however, interesting that the #Emperor in contrast to other European powers such as #France or #England only dispatched a resident, a lower rank #diplomat to #Constantinople. The unclear positions of residents within the hierarchy of #emdiplomacy led to permanent ceremonial conflicts with other #diplomats there. (3/6)

While the eyes of #earlymodern European politics were on the two German provinicial cities of Münster and Osnabrück where more than 140 #emdiplomats tried to negotiate a #peaceTreaty, the day-to-day business of most #diplomats continued elsewhere.

One of these #diplomats who was not in the spotlight was Alexander von Greiffenklau zu Vollrads, the Imperial representative in #Constantinople. (1/6)

During the #ThirtyYearsWar she turned into an officially accredited #emdiplomat – an absolute exceptional case because most female #earlymodern #diplomats were acting informally. In 1638 Renée du Bec-Crespin was offically entrusted to hand over instructions regarding the negotiations on #Breisach fortress to her husband.

In 1645 she was dispatched to #Poland as ambassadrice extraordinare in the context of the marriage between Maria de Gonzaga and Polish king Wladyslaw IV. Although it was quite normal that (experienced) ladies-in-waiting accompanied a princely bride when she moved to her new #dynasty, these missions usually were led by men. Renée Bec-Crespin was made head of the embassy and thus the first and most distinguished representative of the royal family. This once more emphasises her exceptional standing as one of only a very few #womeninmalefields. (2/3)

When talking about #emdiplomats most people probably think of middle-aged white men. And, honestly, most studies within European #NewDiplomaticHistory focus on just this group, thereby, reinforcing a too narrow picture of diplomatic actors. During the last years the perspective was broadened, for example by paying more attention to female #diplomats, and we have already introduced some examples of women in #diplomacy in this year’s #emdiplomacy #adventcalendar. However, these attempts still remain part of a eurocentric white narrative on #earlymodern diplomacy. Therefore, we want to draw your attention to diplomats of colour. (1/6)

For the #handbook Cziráki will look at the High Porte as a place of European diplomatic interactions; a topic that gets lots of attention by current research.

She describes the High Porte as an international diplomatic sphere where #diplomats from many different countries of different status met. Thus, there were not only representaives of the #Emperor or the king of #France, but of territories that were tributary to the #OttomanEmpire. (3/4)
