“They say comparison is the thief of joy. That’s especially true if you suck and you compare yourself to people who are awesome – and since Elon sucks like it’s his job, I’m thieving a ton of joy by comparing the 140-odd number of Tesla Semi trucks out there to Volvo’s much larger, less-sucky 5,000-plus number."

Electrek · Volvo delivers 5,000th electric semi with little fanfare, sending a BIG messageBy Jo Borrás

"Too much information" for the fossil fuel industry to tolerate, so it purchased vanishment.

In a strange way this is diagnostic of the recent success of #EnergyModernization.

Note how the gloves are coming off as the threat to the industry becomes serious. The industry has only been dabbling in interference until now. Its resources have not even been scratched at the atom-thick level in pursuit of paralysis, at this point. The current havoc was bought for a fraction of wealth completely invisible at the bottom line.

Only when the entire resource has been monetized will we be allowed more progress.

Bit of a vicious circle in play, according to this.

"Recent research found cross-sectional evidence that conspiracy belief is an important predictor of wind farm opposition. The current work extends this finding and sheds light on the temporal relationship between these variables. A preregistered, three-wave study among German adults (N = 297) using Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel analyses found support for our hypothesis that an increase in conspiracy mentality (i.e., the general propensity to believe conspiracy theories) predicts more negative attitudes towards wind farms close to one's hometown four months later. We also found evidence for the opposite direction, namely that an increase in negative attitudes predicts higher conspiracy mentality four months later. Thus, conspiracy belief and wind farm opposition seem to mutually reinforce each other."

(With small N scrupulous methodological process becomes extra important-- but disagreement on that basis will need some effort, not "oh, the sample is so small!")

Here is #27 of our 33-week serial presentation of #ClimateSolutionsMythDebunkings. These were researched and authored at Columbia University School of Law's Sabin Center For Climate Change Law. In collaboration with Sabin, we adapted the original report into individually accessible corrections, handy for sharing etc.

Very few people experience depressed property values due to wind turbines. As the authors allude, there are plenty of other collocations capable of depressing property values. This juxtaposition is spotlighted in our attention for reasons quite apart from the good of homeowners.

Oops, #EnergyModernization is now forbidden.

"...these results highlight the need for a deeper understanding of the multifaceted outcomes of agricultural and solar PV co-location decisions...

This work was supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) INFEWS grant number 2018-67003-27406. We credit additional support from the USDA NIFA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive grant number 2021-68012-35923..."

NatureImpacts of agrisolar co-location on the food–energy–water nexus and economic security - Nature SustainabilityThis analysis looks at the impacts and outcomes from installing solar arrays on agricultural land, finding that these ‘agrisolar’ projects can displace food production but simultaneously provide economic security and offset water use.

"But batteries are unreliable and dealing with them is a hassle."

Here's a battery for garden equipment that has been running a mower since 2012 and has no noticeable degradation.

No stink, no racket, no oil changes, no fouled plugs, no air filter cleaning, no struggle with gummed-up carb for first start of the year.

Obviously far less hassle.

"It just works."

(Don't run 'em down below ~25% and longevity becomes very pleasing.)

Broad acceptance of human-caused #ClimateChange results in changing tactics by anachronistic industries keen to continue monetizing outmoded products.

#EnergyModernization is largely converged on two sources of upgraded power: wind and solar. Wind turbines seem to have won the race for "most patently ridiculous misinformation" spun up by talented authors of bunk, fodder for friction in town hall meetings and other policy venues.

Here's one such #ClimateSolutionsMyth.

"Results show that energy autarky is a context-dependent concept and that local community members attribute different connotations to it, some of which overlap. Additionally, challenges to autarky in local energy systems follow from local contextual conditions, leading to varying degrees to which communities achieve or even pursue autarky."

"Flooding the zone" means drowning #ClimateProgress, among other victims.

Situational awareness is nasty in an ugly environment but people interested in maintaining decent Earth habitability of the type we'd all prefer had best keep up with events.

This week's Skeptical Science #ClimateChange news roundup includes a broad survey of the new US administration's concerted effort to reverse #EnergyModernization, maintain cash flow for anachronistic legacy industries.

Our last blast for 2024 was this collaborative output with the #SabinCenterForClimateChangeLaw, a #RenewableEnergyMythDebunking.

One of 33 compact but solidly sourced treatments authored by Sabin and adapted for easy individual access via Skeptical Science.

This particular set of currently accurate facts is highly vulnerable to changing circumstances. Will it need revising over the next few years? We shall see.

Commencing Nov. 5 we've been highlighting one of these #FossilFuelPropaganda #Debunkings per week. Here's the last for 2024. Stay tuned for more in 2025!

"In this paper, we optimize capacity layouts for a European energy system under net-zero CO2 emissions for 62 different weather years... we... optimize their operation in every other weather year to assess resource adequacy ... Our analysis shows a variation of ± 10% in total system costs across weather years. Layouts designed for years with compound weather events prove more robust, achieving resource adequacy of 99.9%..."

NatureDesigning a sector-coupled European energy system robust to 60 years of historical weather data - Nature CommunicationsHighly renewable energy systems, built on wind, solar PV, and sectoral integration, can handle year-to-year weather variability while ensuring resource adequacy and CO2 neutrality, at 10% higher cost than systems designed for average weather patterns.

Nice.

"The hydrogen production cost of US$2.46/kgH2 aligns with the green hydrogen cost target set by the European Commission for the coming decade."

And a bit (just a dopant) of molybdenum is the most exotic material used in this process. Thanks to steel production we're all good on obtaining Mo.

One of these days we'll be revolutionized with a pleasing #EnergyModernization step change.

Too bad #PNAS mindlessly emulates for-profit; article itself is obfuscated.

Whether we call it #EnergyModernization or #EnergyTransition or #RenewableEnergy, with #ClimateChange becoming undeniable the fossilized parts of our energy industry are adapting tactics to keep us locked in the past-- and ruin our chances for #ClimateMitigation.

We collaborated with the #SabinCenterForClimateChangeLaw to adapt their comprehensive #debunking of #RenewableEnergyMyths for easier access. We're highlighting each of 33 articles, one per week.

Better too early than too late? But in a system powered by capital markets, this is a risk.

"Our general findings deviate from the standard curve as it does not have a long segment where production is stable. Production starts falling too early. Lack of stable operation period is harmful to wind farm economics. It indicates immature technology and a potential for improvement. "

I'm guessing that railroads etc. followed the same general path.
