Ice formations on the rocks of Babia Góra.
Despite the coming spring, the wind and negative temperatures create interesting ice formations on the rocks. April 2025

The photo shows a group of cracked rocks on Babia Góra Mountain. The rocks occupy more than half of the lower right corner of the photograph. The rest of the photo is an intensely blue, cloudless sky. To the left of the rocks, in the lower left corner, you can see several small, wind-beaten spruce trees, and behind them, forested mountains. In the foreground, just below the rocks, there is still snow. In the upper part of the rocks you can see interesting white ice formations, created by strong winds.

The photo shows a panorama of the snowy Tatra Mountains from Babia Góra. The bottom half of the photo shows partially out-of-focus green branches of the mountain pine. The upper part is the snow-capped Tatra Mountains. The mountains are slightly hazy, photographed from a distance of about 40 km in the afternoon sun. Above the mountains a narrow strip of blue sky and on it a strip of clouds parallel to the mountains.

Spring is slowly beginning on Babia Góra. Snow can be found only in a few shady places and, of course, on the top of the mountain. The high peaks of the Tatra Mountains still completely white.

Green returns to the forest.
Dentaria glandulosa (Cardamine glanduligera) - PL: Żywiec gruczołowaty

On the right side of the photo you can see a large trunk of an old alder. On the left, a wild plant creeping along the ground and emerging from the trunk. This plant is Dentaria glandulosa (Cardamine glanduligera). PL: Żywiec gruczołowaty. A typical forest plant, especially in beech forests. Dentaria glandulosa forms characteristic green carpets in early spring, when many other plants have not yet developed leaves. It is a plant with beautiful purple flowers and palmate-trifoliate leaves, found in the Carpathian Mountains and Subcarpathian region, as well as lower down, but adjacent to the mountains. I found this particular one about 50 km south of Cracow, on the edge of a beech forest, close to a small forest stream.

The photo shows a beaver dam on a small forest stream in warm afternoon sun. There is a lot of dry grass everywhere. The dam runs from the left to the right of the photo, halfway up the frame. On the left side of the dam a stream of water flows down, creating a small, blurred waterfall (long exposure). Below the waterfall the first pieces of green grass grow. Above the dam, an old fallen tree trunk is submerged in the water. Grasses and trees are reflected in the water surface. At the very top of the frame is the bank of a stream covered with dry, yellow-beige grass.

Dense coniferous forest growing in a swampy area. The upper two-thirds of the frame are a dense tangle of trees. Most of them are in shadow. In the foreground, dry grasses and marshy swampy terrain with water. In the center of the frame, a pile of thick, old branches. Rays of sunlight penetrate between the trees, illuminating the marshy ground and some of the green branches.

A sunny afternoon in a March forest. A forest road runs through the coniferous forest, from the bottom of the frame to the top. The forest on the left side of the road is dark. Between the trees on the right side of the road intense sunlight falls on the road. The sun's rays intensify the colours of the dry grasses, the brown-golden leaves of the young beech trees and the green colour of the first blades of grass.

Today the weather was terrible. So I searched my archives for what March 15th looked like in other years. I found a photo taken exactly 10 years ago. As I can see, it was sunny.

The lizard tree and a very sad stone head.
March 2025.

Remains of an old, small sandstone quarry in the forest. On the exposed stone slope there is a large root of a beech tree growing over a precipice. The root resembles a lizard that helps the tree stay alive. One of the large stones below the lizard resembles a simplified silhouette of a sad human head.

Beech forest in the warm afternoon sun. The photo shows a young beech forest on the mountainside. The photo is divided roughly into two halves, from the lower left to the upper right corner. Bottom half - the forest floor - is completely covered with brown and orange dry leaves and overgrown with young beech trees. One tree on the right side of the frame is older. In the upper half of the photo, you can see a fuzzy forest on another hill, with a slightly blue sky above it.

Warm afternoon sun. An old, uninhabited house in a remote village, right next to the street. At the bottom of the photo is the side of the road and behind it a narrow strip of green grass. The rest of the frame is occupied by an old house with two windows. From under the damaged white wall of the house, you can see the sandstone from which the house was built. The roof is covered with old concrete tiles. On the left side of the frame, right next to the left window, very close to the wall there is a tree. In front of the house, on the lawn, sits a small, black and white dog. He must be counting the cars passing by. Or maybe he's waiting for someone?

Sunny but very sad photo, taken a few days ago.
Harsh light and a boring blue sky. Lack of any cloud overhead. But this is this year's winter in southern Poland!
February 22, 2025. "Trzy Korony" (Three Crowns) in Pieniny Mountains.

A sunny winter day but completely free of snow and frost. At the bottom the meadow with dry grass. There are two pine trees growing in the meadow. One large on the right side of the frame and the other much smaller on the left. In the background, the white Three Crowns ("Trzy Korony") mountains covered with forest at its foot. Over the mountains, intensely blue sky without a single cloud. This is what winter looks like this year...
