re-#introduction
Hi Fediscience! I am an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (Honolulu). I got here starting from Physics training with many scientific detours into data-driven models, complex systems, nanomaterial self-assembly, human learning of complex networks, naval ships, and design problems.
I grew up in Belarus and have *opinions* on that region of the world. I've been on Fediverse since late 2022 when *something* happened to our previous cybersocial infrastructure, but the previous server I was on is sunsetting. Please come say hi and recommend cool people to follow here.
I have a blog with longer thoughts on science-adjacent topics.

Some amazing #network research that revealed the top candidates for Pope recently. Of those revealed one is now the new Pope! The Vatican, and those around it, are a socio-political system where the “golden rule” is “location, location, location“

*Angst M, Müller NN, Walker V. Automated extraction of discourse networks from large volumes of media data* (open access)

doi.org/10.1017/nws.2025.4

As part of our sustainability.discourses project, we developed an automated method to gather and track discourse networks around urban sustainable mobility, based on media data.

The article describes the approach in detail and reports an evaluation of the internal validity (do we measure what we ourselves think we measure) of the pipeline.

tl;dnr: Automating discourse network data gathering can work well to capture broader tendencies. In many cases, it is likely not worth investing in automating data gathering to understand discourse however.

And here's is a list of journals in my field(s) that don't suck, based on my (own, possibly evolving) criteria. I hope it grows over time, it's still pretty bleak.

Please, if you know of other journals in those fields that don't suck, let me know. And if you are involved with one of the journals on these lists, thanks so much for your work, you rock. And if you need reviewing or anything I can help with, let me know.

Policies must be flexible and responsive, adjusting to evolving conditions much like navigating an evolving trajectory in a high-dimensional state space. We can’t pretend to tell this to any decision maker, at least not in these terms, and scientists worldwide struggle to do their best to bring on the tables of policy and decision makers. They must be heard: their insights must inform decision-making at every level.
