Re: the crash of the Delta plane at Toronto Pearson today...

In the safety briefing, they tell you that in the event that you need to evacuate the plane, you DO NOT STOP to get your carry-on luggage or anything else. You just go.

And my partner just saw video from the crash, with some asshole coming out of the plane dragging a gigantic suitcase.

The plane was upside-down, with wings broken off, and on fire. This was pretty much the textbook definition of "emergency evacuation".

Hey, jerk, what if you slowing everything down to grab your oh-so-important suitcase resulted in people behind you burning to death?

Can we find that guy, and charge him with something serious? "I'm too important to leave my carry-on behind, I don't care if it puts others at risk" is NOT OKAY.

Pearson's #correlation is irrelevant if you suspect that the relationship is not a straight line.

If monotonic relationship:
"#Spearman’s rho is particularly useful for small samples where weak correlations are expected, as it can detect subtle monotonic trends." It is "widespread across disciplines where the measurement precision is not guaranteed".
"#Kendall’s Tau-b is less affected [than Spearman’s rho] by outliers in the data, making it a robust option for datasets with extreme values."

Stayed up long past bedtime to finish The Last List of Mabel Beaumont (by Laura Pearson). Such rich relationships, fractured and so human, with such love and wisdom. Also appreciated the 86 year old protagonist: being old doesn’t make you dead (until it does, of course. But that is not a spoiler, just an observation)

Warning: this book made me cry. So good.

From a conversation with a friend on a recent Facebook post. A memory of a memory, #academic ghosts haunting the dusty rooms of my brain.

I once spent a very enjoyable afternoon in the #University of #Minnesota #Biostatistics department library reading through century-old bound volumes of #Biometrika, which is now a somewhat obscure #journal, but was in its day instrumental to the development of #statistics. All the great names were there—#Yule, #Pearson, #Fisher, et al.—and it was a clubby little world back then. Everybody who was anybody in statistics knew everybody else.

Just like today, they used a lot of space in their papers refuting each other’s papers. But the writing style was completely different, much more personal: many of the papers read more like conversations than the structured, pedantic language of modern journal articles in practically every field. “First I tried this, but it didn’t work, so next I …” “Like I said to so-and-so in a recent letter …” “According to whosit, such-and-such is true, but frankly, whosit is an idiot.”

Well, I recognized what they were doing: forming #cliques and having slow-motion #flamewars. Everything old is new again. Sometimes I wonder if we wouldn’t be better off stripping out the modern pretense of detachment.
