Licht am Horizont

Wenn das Herz mal traurig ist, schenkt der Himmel Zuversicht.

Ein ruhiger Sonnenuntergang über einer sanft geschwungenen Wiese. Die untergehende Sonne taucht den Himmel in warme Orange-, Rot- und Violetttöne. Dunkle Bäume stehen als Silhouetten am Horizont, während der Vordergrund im Schatten liegt. Die Szene wirkt friedlich, hoffnungsvoll und still.

This photo required a number of things to go right to get the sun flare below the arch.

It started with a 12km hike through some pretty overgrown trails. The next issue was the sun is only in the right position at sunset for about a month each year.

There is such a small gap between the bottom of the arch and the top of the hill opposite, so there was only a couple of minutes of the light like this.

Finally, the weather needed to be perfect with no cloud blocking the sun.

The Smoke Creek Desert can be harsh and barren, but after a good winter, it comes alive with beauty. This mid-May evening started with grey, gloomy skies, but as the sun neared the horizon, the clouds opened up and exploded with color. The moment was fleeting but unforgettable.

The Smoke Creek Desert in northeastern California and northwestern Nevada can be a barren landscape. However, after a nice wet winter, it can be incredibly beautiful in spring. On this particular mid-May evening, my wife and I had been out for a drive during some thunderstorm activity. Most of the afternoon had been a bust for photos due to grey, gloomy conditions. However, the last hour before dusk was absolutely incredible as the clouds opened up and then colored up as the sun got low on the horizon. I captured this image near the junction of Smoke Creek Road and US 395 just after sunset.
