(cut) My career, my reputation, my finances, even my home was on the line. All because I came here, to warn you, that I didn't think democracy was going to survive the technology that you're building, however incredible it is. In fact, I was the person who almost didn't survive. An pretty much everything I was warning about is now coming, true. I can't sugar coat, it It's a bit of a head fuck. I have a lot of emotions about coming here and Ted also, I suspect is feeling them too. But what actually I finally realized yesterday, is that the denial and the confusion that I've been feeling, is maybe what you're feeling too. I felt powerless for a really long time. So, if that's what you're feeling, I get it. But we have to act now. My alarm system is ringing, again. There are things, that we can do. In my case, I survived and you will too, but it's by learning how to fight that. This is my guide and it has to start with naming it. It's a coup. I know you probably don't want to hear that and especially here, but we can't fight it, if we can't see it and we can't see it, if we don't name it.
(cut) You know, Trump is sueing news organizations and every day they're settling. These are big corporates with corporate interests. Not everybody can stand up to power, but there are people who are doing it and we can support them. We have to have each other's backs right now because, we are the cavalry now. You know, this is really important to me, but I spoke to a UK liable lawyer, before this talk. I want to say that there is an awful lot of facts, set down in a high court judgment. And we're actually taking the case now to the European Court of Human Rights. We're testing the UK on its laws around freedom of expression. So look after facts, you'll miss them when they've gone. This is Wayback machine, give them money. They're trying to preserve the internet as it's being deleted, day by day. History is our best chance of getting out of this. You know you probably know this phrase, "do not obey in advance." That's Tim Snyder, who's a historian of authoritarianism. We now are in Techno Authoritarianism, we have to learn how to digitally disobey. That can be as simple as the drop down box. Don't accept the cookies. Don't give your real name. Download Signal, the encrypted messaging app. Don't bomb Yemen. Don't add the editor of the Atlantic to your group chat.

First, moving my monetization off of Substack wasn’t as big of a pain in the ass as I thought it would be. After doing my due diligence I landed on Ghost as my new newsletter host, but there were other very good alternatives, and all of them were offering something close to the same experience. Ghost was and is great, I have to say. They offered a concierge service that did almost all the work, porting over content and holding my hand through moving my subscriptions, and even navigating some hiccups that occurred because of the weird way I’ve set up coupons so that people can pay what they want. The team was extremely responsive and diligent and when (rare) issues have come up they have provided quick and useful advice. Additionally, they charge a flat rate rather than taking 10% of my action, as Substack did. My readership list and subscriptions have grown at the same rate as before and engagement is roughly the same. This isn’t a paid advertisement for Ghost and I’m not even going to bother putting up a referral link. This is simply my word to any other creator who is thinking about jumping off of Substack as that platform’s owners continue time and again to prove they’re a real bullshit bunch of bunkos: Moving is easier than you think and costs less.
I would encourage you to keep encouraging people to leave Substack, for very good reasons. But I’d also encourage applying a level of clarity to the effort. The Nazi bar metaphor is a useful one, but it’s time to recognize that if you’re in the U.S., the lesson of the story was ignored, and now the country has become a Nazi bar. People targeted by Nazis are going to stay alive any way they can. I think of queer creators and Black creators and creators whose entire income is based on their newsletter: they’re making calculations with different math than I used. I still think they can safely move, and I think it would be better if they did, and I hope they will, but nevertheless I support them as they try to keep their heads above water.
