[This is ‘unusual’ seismic activity and shaking patterns for this part of the USA, on an ‘unmapped’ fault, and seemingly challenging existing models of earthquake risk in the region; while a 4.8 is not big, it must have been quite a surprise for the people in this heavily populated U.S. Northeast not used to such things (per the paper, the USGS estimated it was felt by some 42 million people.]

Here, a Soyuz rocket takes off in 2023, carrying three of the Expedition 70 crew to the International Space Station. This initial stage of the Soyuz launch vehicle uses four identical rocket boosters lashed around the second stage core. Each of the boosters has a rocket engine with four combustion chambers (and thus four exhaust nozzles) of its own. That creates the fiery flurry of engine plumes seen here. Most of the exhaust plumes are directed downward to provide the thrust needed to lift the rocket, but you can see a few angled slightly to either side to help stabilize the launch vehicle as it rises. Ooof, trying to build a piece of software that depends on the #Thrust library on a system that has both the #NVIDIA and the #AMD one, and one of them is the default path and the other isn't is *painful*.

I've already talked in the past about our issues with Thrust here fediscience.org/@giuseppebilot and here fediscience.org/@giuseppebilot and every time these kind of things pop up I think we should give priority to getting rid of this dependency altogether 8-/
