Time to escape this upside-down nightmare! Join me as I tackle The Deck in Tomb Raider II Remastered—dodging goons, platforming over certain death, and hopefully making it out of the Maria Doria wreck once and for all. 🤞

If all goes well, we’re heading to Tibet next—snow, monks, and way fewer drowning hazards. ❄️🏔️

Guiding the player with light is one of the most basic level design tricks. TR4 utilizes it very well, drawing interest to where it should be, whether it's a part of the main quest or a subtly hidden secret room.

This example leads to a secret room and encourages the player to learn to use the rope to get there. It's simple, it's not cheating if you see it, and it's all about guiding the gameplay without being too in your face. But it shouldn't be pitch dark.

I am deeply disappointed in the new Tomb Raider Remastered. A lot of players are complaining about the game being "too dark", but the problem is deeper than that.

They ignored the original art direction. Tomb Raider 4 is one of the most beautiful games, with its warm gold and shining emerald hues, and clever contrasts. Most areas combine the two and it looks beautiful.

The Remaster, however, flattens it with the dull "realistic lighting".

It interferes with gameplay, too. Here, I have no idea where this tunnel leads to! It's one thing if the game designers decided it should be too dark for tension reasons, but obviously they wanted us to see that this hallway curves downward! So why hide it now?

Tomb Raider 3 was too dark by design, in part to show off the flare mechanic. Annoying, but understandable. TR4 is not like that, however.

The focus on "realistic lighting" has been an issue with modern media for a long time. Yes, the Remaster is "realistic" - but it also makes for a rather poor video game. Tomb Raider is *meant* to be a little magical and mysterious!

When I played TR4 more than 20 years ago, I was enchanted by the jewel-like water. I still think it's so pretty. Take this room with the pool for example: is glowing water realistic? No. But it makes Lara's silhouette stand out!

I was having too much fun, didn't save for a long time... died... lol. Enough gaming for now!

I forgot that you kill animals in this level. :( Not only do you fight tigers, you fight WHITE TIGERS. Thanks, Eidos.

There's some developer humour in the monkey cage being chock full of grenade launcher ammo.

Here we go! My all-time favourite level - It's a Madhouse! Welcome to Paris, let's visit the zoo! 🐅🦜

(Before I forget, a small complaint about TR1-3 in general: some of the sound effects are GODAWFUL yet repetitive! I really wish they'd fixed that. They made the main artifact in this DLC visible (in the OG you need to light a flare to see it) so why not fix a far worse problem...?)
