The Associated Press said Toby Keith played for a USFL farm team. He did not play for the USFL, and the USFL never had a farm team. The team in question was the Oklahoma Drillers of the United Football Teams of America, a very semiprofessional league in the early 1980’s. That league is defunct.

Speaking of football, the XFL and USFL, now collectively known as the UFL, will drop their dispersal and protected players list at 10 am EST today.

Today I learned that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson together with movie producer (and ex-wife) Dany Garcia owned the #XFL after buying it off his old #WWE boss Vince McMahon.

And they merged recently with a league called #USFL , which was owned by FOX Corporation and now it’s been rebranded to form a new league called #UFL (United Football League).

Anyway, between them all, they didn’t manage to rustle up a good website before announcing the thing.

The USFL and XFL will hold a dispersal draft today for teams that were contracted in the merger. Each current team will protect 42 players. The rest will go into the dispersal draft. Each team will pick 20 unprotected players from within the same division. Any players left will be in a supplemental draft to be held on January 15th, where either division can sign them.

Speaking to someone with knowledge, the likely reason that the UFL decided to keep the Roughnecks name but utilize the Gamblers team had to do with existing contracted vendors. There is no need to change any agreements/contracts the team might have structured if the name stayed the same. In other words, it might have been more straightforward for the UFL to stick with what they have.
