After seeing the video from the GaryH Tech channel (@garyhtech@bsd.cafe) I tried #NetBSD on real hardware for the first time too. The installation really was not as intuitive to me as #OpenBSD and #FreeBSD , especially I was trying to install the system to a separate partition alongside FreeBSD on the same disk. But hey I finally did it after some googling!

What a big surprise! I just found out that #OpenBSD suspend to S3 and wake up worked flawlessly on my #ThinkPad T470S. #X with good old #Fvwm and network with WiFi worked fine after wakeup. Fn function keys for backlight. I previously tested #FreeBSD and everything was working great too which is no surprise at all. I don't know if it's because tp had better support for #Unix or because devs tend to use tp thus support them at greater effort. Nevertheless, this is the best performance for the puffy and the beastie I have even seen on bare metal.

Also I am curious about #FreeBSD with #ports and #poudriere, how do you guys manage #Firefox and possibly #LibreOffiice? It took me~5h to compile #LLVM default flavor on my laptop, I would just assume giants I listed above will take more than 10 hours? I still remember old days when I was using #Gentoo #Linux and whenever there was updates for them I had to keep my PC on overnight...But nowadays #Firefox seems to update more frequently, I dare not to compile few times a month.

Pilot compiling with #poudriere for #FreeBSD #ports went well! It did seem a bit complicated to configure at first but sing ports made easy with #poudriere and #jail. It was so simple and straightforward to actually run #poudriere that I secretly thought it took out all the fun of seeing scrolling screens of compling! #BSD #Unix #UseBSD #RunBSD #FOSS
I just upgraded #OpenBSD from 7.1 all the way up to 7.7 one release at a time in a #KVM VM running on my laptop #Debian. At first #tcsh and #vim were giving coredumps. I realized I did not even run #pkg_add even once so I did a

Support for current Wi-Fi specs is the only thing keeping me from using BSD on laptops. I'm really excited to see progress being made on it!
More tests today: Following #OpenBSD and #FreeBSD, I tried #NetBSD on my laptop today. I never expected but it was the best ever. #XDM started out of box with a nice #CTWM sesssion after login, WiFi connects after a few lines ifconfig commands. Suspending to S3 worked but resume resulted in no keyboard or touchpad response. Will look into this. #BSD #UseBSD #Unix #FOSS
Does amd64 support (64 bit) mean different things for #OpenBSD and #FreeBSD ? Because on my laptop with Intel Pentium T2390, which supports 64 bit systems, booting latest #OpenBSD 7.6 installation media resulted in a crash shortly after loading kernel, while #FreeBSD REL 13.1 happily booted and allowed me to install to hard disk or play around in live mode.

#FreeBSD : In my case I think it is getting very close though. When trying to resume from suspend. The keyboard, power and HDD indicator led all came back on, fan weirdly stop and then on for a few seconds and then off again repeatedly. But input is not working, screen stays forever black and off. #BSD #UseBSD #FOSS #Unix
