🔴 **Recurrent humid phases in Arabia over the past 8 million years**

“_Wetter conditions likely facilitated mammalian dispersals between Africa and Eurasia, with Arabia acting as a key crossroads for continental-scale biogeographic exchanges._”

🔴 **Qaryat al-Fāw/Qaryatum dhāt Kāhilim: On the identity of the god Kahl**

“_Despite his name being recorded in various texts and inscriptions on numerous objects that confirm his role as the city's patron god, scant information exists regarding his attributes or sphere of influence. Nonetheless, clues on some of his characteristics can be gleaned from coins bearing his likeness._”

Continued thread

✧ hamerkop ✧

The hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is a medium-sized wading bird. It is the only living species in the genus Scopus and the family Scopidae. Its closest relatives are thought to be the pelicans and the shoebill, in the order Pelecaniformes. The shape of its head with a long bill and crest at the back is reminiscent of a hammer, which has given this specie...

🔴 **Human migration from the Levant and Arabia into Yemen since Last Glacial Maximum**

_“Our results paint a picture of Yemen being in a crossroads, marked by the large-scale baseline genetic diversity that largely evolved many millennia. Yemen witnessed an initial gene flow pattern defined by the more ancient markers from the rest of the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant that started as early as the Epipaleolithic period followed by population isolation and limited expansion. Yemen witnessed additional, but less substantial, flow from southwest Asia, Jordan and Syria through the Nabateans during the active incense trade between the Levant and Yemen, from Arabia during the Islamic Expansion, and a subsequent one from the west and southwest dominated by East Africa.”_

🔴 A Bronze Age town in the Khaybar walled oasis: Debating early urbanization in Northwestern Arabia

"Alongside this local economy, the site was part of a wider regional exchange network, at a time when trans-Arabian travel by donkey was on the increase ([29, 61]). The microfabrics of a few rare sherds of Red Burnished Ware found during surveys and excavations seems to come from outside the oasis (perhaps Qurayyah or Tayma). Sourcing analyses of arsenic copper at Tayma and Qurayyah have shown a regional provenance, either from Oman or the Arabian Shield ([60]: 141, [64])."

doi.orgA Bronze Age town in the Khaybar walled oasis: Debating early urbanization in Northwestern ArabiaRecent exploration of the Khaybar oasis by the Khaybar Longue Durée Archaeological Project (AFALULA-RCU-CNRS) has led to the discovery of an exceptional Bronze Age fortified site called al-Natah. For the first time in Northwestern Arabia, the characteristics of a third/second-millennium-BCE settlement can be assessed over a large area. Preliminary archaeological survey and soundings have revealed a fortified 2.6-hectares town built around 2400–2000 BCE which lasted until at least 1500 BCE and possibly 1300 BCE−but with possible interruptions−, functionally subdivided into a residential area, a probable decision-making zone and a necropolis. The nucleated dwellings were constructed following a standard plan and were connected by small streets. By comparison with neighboring oasis centers, we suggest that Northwestern Arabia during the Bronze Age−largely dominated by pastoral nomadic groups and already integrated into long-distance trade networks−was dotted with interconnected monumental walled oases centered around small fortified towns. And by comparison with the contemporary situation in the Southern Levant, we also envisage that the archaeological record bears witness to a ‘low urbanization’ (or ‘slow urbanism’), indigenous to North Arabia, evidencing weak but increasing social complexity through the Early and Middle Bronze Ages.
