One of the two lions on the Cenotaph in Glasgow's George Square. It was created in the 1920s to remember those who died during World War I. It was designed by the architect J.J. Burnet, while the sculptures, including the lions, were created by Ernest Gillick.

There were two classes of people at the ceremony that did not need chalk outlines or marks to hit, like the royals and the politicians did; and in an odd way, even though they might seem to be opposites, they both wear uniforms.

Putting unsubtle markings on the stones so that the politicians didn't mess up a neat wreath laying smacks of military organisation to me. (-: Notice that only the politicians got to place their own wreaths on chalked areas. For almost all of the ceremony people handed their wreaths to a relay team of wreath layers.
Politicians want to be seen doing it themselves, but they are stage-managed carefully.

By the looks of the IWM photographs, there were lines on the ground at the opening ceremony in 1920.
Military ceremonies tend to be very organized, and I cannot really fault them for living up to the notion of military precision.
I'm sure I've never seen chalked numbers on the cenotaph for where the wreaths are laid. Really! #cenotaph

- for animals, women, bomber command, Churchill as well as a number for countries like Canada - all taking bits of our parks
There are no memorials for Sikhs, Hindus - why have one for Muslims?
